The Edmonton Oilers have completed a key piece of off-season business.

Edmonton re-signed star defenceman Evan Bouchard to a four-year, US$42-million contract Monday, according to multiple media reports.

The hard-shooting Bouchard, known for his "Bouch Bomb" from the point, was set to become a restricted free agent when the market opened Tuesday at noon ET.

The 25-year-old from Oakville, Ont., earns a massive raise on his previous $3.9-million salary cap hit after back-to-back high-production seasons to help Edmonton into the Stanley Cup final twice.

Bouchard, drafted 10th overall by the Oilers in 2018, broke out with 18 goals and 64 assists across 81 games in 2023-24 before adding 32 points in 25 games during the playoffs.

Last season, he tallied 23 points in 22 playoff games after a 67-point regular season.

Only Bobby Orr (1.243) has a higher points-per-game average among defencemen than Bouchard's 1.08 in the post-season.

Bouchard becomes the NHL's fourth-highest-paid defenceman next season, behind Erik Karlsson, Drew Doughty and Rasmus Dahlin.

Earlier Monday, the Oilers re-signed winger Kasperi Kapanen to a one-year, US$1.3-million contract.

Kapanen, 28, had 13 points in 57 regular-season games and added six more in 12 playoff appearances after being claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Blues.

The Oilers also signed centre Noah Philp on Monday to a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000.

Philp, 26, appeared in 15 games for Edmonton last season and recorded two assists.

The Canmore, Alta., native had 35 points, including 19 goals, in 55 games with the AHL's Bakersfield Condors.

Edmonton forwards Corey Perry, Connor Brown and Jeff Skinner, along with defenceman John Klingberg, remain unsigned and are set to become unrestricted free agents.

Oilers superstar Connor McDavid also becomes eligible to sign an extension Tuesday. He has one year left on his current deal.

Toronto Maple Leafs pending unrestricted free agent Mitch Marner will be dealt to the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign and trade, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston says Marner's deal is for eight years and carries a $12 million average annual value.

Per TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, assuming the trade goes through, forward Nicolas Roy will be heading to Toronto and believes it is a one-for-one trade.

Drafted fourth overall by the Maple Leafs in 2015, Marner is fifth all-time in Maple Leafs scoring with 221 goals and 741 points in 657 career games.

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Vancouver Canucks and goaltender Thatcher Demko are closing in on a contract extension, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

Dreger adds there is agreement between the two sides on term, but still some work being done on the dollar figure and structure. Demko will be eligible to sign the extension on Tuesday.

TSN's Farhan Lalji reports the Canucks also have an extension in place with Conor Garland, which can become official on Tuesday.

The news Monday should Demko leave signed alongside goaltenders Arturs Silovs and Kevin Lankinen on Vancouver's roster. Lankinen is set to begin a five-year, $22.5 million deal next season, while Silovs is scheduled to become a restricted free agent after next season.

Demko, 29, had a 10-8-3 record last season with the Canucks, recording a 2.90 goals-against average and .889 save percentage.

He missed the first two months of the season while dealing with a lower-body injury he sustained during the 2023-24 playoffs. He also missed 15 games later in the season while dealing with a second lower-body injury.

The 6-foot-4 netminder is entering the final season of a five-year, $25 million contract that carries an annual cap hit of $5 million. He is currently scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Drafted 36th overall by the Canucks in 2014, Demko has a career record of 126-89-20 with a 2.80 GAA and .910 save percentage.

Demko's best season came during the 2023-24 season where he went 35-14-2 record with a 2.45 GAA and .918 save percentage and finished second in Vezina Trophy voting.

The San Diego, Calif., native represented the United States at the 2019 World Championship in an eighth-place finish.

Garland staying put

The 29-year-old Garland posted 19 goals and 50 points in 81 games this past season.

He is entering the last of a five-year deal that carried a $4.95 million average annual value.

Garland has been a consistent presence for the Canucks posting between 17-20 goals and 46-52 points in each of the past four seasons in Vancouver.

A fifth-round draft pick of the Arizona Coyotes in 2015, he has 122 goals and 291 points in 485 career games with the Coyotes and Canucks.

Canucks bring back Sasson

The Canucks stayed busy on Monday, reaching a one-year deal with forward Max Sasson, per his agent Dan Milstein.

Sasson, 24, had three goals and seven points in 29 games this past season for Vancouver. He also suited up in 41 AHL games for the Abbotsford Canucks, tallying 13 goals and 32 points in 41 games.

Bains, Raty, Brisebois all retained

A busy afternoon for the Canucks continued with retaining three more players in forwards Arshdeep Bains and Aatu Raty and defenceman Guillaume Brisebois.

Bains, 24, is a native of nearby Surrey, BC and returns on a two-year deal. Terms were not disclosed.

An undrafted free agent out of the Western Hockey League's Red Deer Rebels, Bains made his NHL debut during the 2023-2024 season. He appeared in 13 contests for the Canucks last season, scoring a goal.

Bains spent most of the season with the American Hockey League's Abbotsford Canucks with whom he won the Calder Cup last week. He had seven goals and seven assists in 24 playoff games.

Raty's deal is also for two years and comes with an average annual value of $775,000.

A native of Oulu, Finland, Raty was acquired by the Canucks as part of the deal that sent Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders in January of 2023.

He appeared in 33 games for the Canucks this past season, scoring seven goals and adding four assists.

The 22-year-old Raty was also a part of the Calder Cup run for Abbotsford, appearing in six games and registering three assists.

Brisebois is back on a one-year, two-way deal.

The 66th overall selection of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft out of the QMJHL's Acadie-Bathurst Titan, Brisebois has appeared in 30 NHL games over five seasons for the Canucks, including three this past season. He has one goal and two assists.

{allcanada} Canada's Fernandez, Auger-Aliassime and Diallo advance to second round at Wimbledon

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Canada's Leylah Fernandez, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriel Diallo are moving on to the second round at Wimbledon.

Fernandez cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Great Britain's Hannah Klugman in her first-round match Monday.

Fernandez, the 29th seed, dominated with 23 winners to 10 for the 16-year-old Klugman, ranked 573rd in the world.

The 22-year-old from Laval, Que., also converted five of six break point opportunities to win the match in one hour nine minutes. Fernandez has never advanced past the second round at the All England Club.

Montreal's Auger-Aliassime rallied back from two sets to one down to defeat Australia's James Duckworth 6-2, 3-6, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4.

Auger-Aliassime, the 25th seed, hit 69 winners compared to 27 for Duckworth, but the Canadian also committed 54 unforced errors.

The 24-year-old Auger-Aliassime — a Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2021 — also struck 26 aces and went five for 15 on break point chances in the three-hour 42-minute match.

Diallo, 23, rolled to victory in his Wimbledon main-draw debut, winning 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 over Germany's Daniel Altmaier.

The Montreal native hit seven aces, 30 winners — to 15 for Altmaier — and capitalized on six of 12 break points.

Diallo boasts a career-high No. 40 ranking after winning his first ATP title at the Libema Open in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands earlier in June.

Earlier Monday, Carson Branstine saw her Grand Slam debut end with a first-round loss to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, falling 6-1, 7-5.

Branstine, who was born in California but represents Canada through family ties in Toronto, fired seven aces and matched Sabalenka with 17 winners, but the Canadian committed 26 unforced errors and was unable to convert her lone breakpoint chance.

Still, Branstine found her rhythm in the second set, and Sabalenka took notice.

"In the first set, she didn't serve great, but in the second, most of her serves were 120mph, which is crazy," Sabalenka said. "I was lucky to break her in one game. Tough match, tough win."

The 23-year-old Branstine, ranked 194th in the world, earned her spot through last week's qualifying tournament at the All England Club.

Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., the 27th seed, was set to take on Argentina's Mariano Navone on Tuesday.

Sasson also had 32 points (13 goals and 19 assists) in 41 games during the regular season with the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks.

He added 14 points (five goals and nine assists) in 24 playoff games to help Abbotsford capture the Calder Cup.

After two seasons at Western Michigan University, Sasson signed an entry-level deal with Vancouver as an undrafted free agent in 2023.

The Vancouver Canucks signed defenceman Guillaume Brisebois to one-year, two-way contract on Monday.

Brisebois appeared in three games with the Canucks this past season.

He had five points (two goals and three assists) in 48 games during the regular season with the AHL's Abbotsford Canucks and added three points (two goals and one assist) in 24 playoff games to help the team claim the Calder Cup.

"Guillaume played a big role and was a key contributor with Abbotsford during our Calder Cup winning run," Canucks GM Patrik Allvin said in a release. Guillaume will add to our organizational depth on the backend."

{allcanada} Whitecaps blank LAFC, spoil Giroud's farewell match

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Emmanuel Sabbi scored on Vancouver's only shot on goal, Yohei Takaoka made four saves, and the Whitecaps spoiled Olivier Giroud's farewell match with a 1-0 victory over Los Angeles FC on Sunday night.

Giroud started and played 60 minutes in his final appearance for LAFC. The famed French forward is expected to sign with Lille after one disappointing year in Los Angeles during which he was largely an unproductive substitute, scoring just five goals in 38 matches.

Giroud had a chance to go out with a bang when Denis Bouanga fed him an exceptional cross while he was unmarked deep in Vancouver's penalty area in the 50th minute, but Giroud volleyed it over the bar.

Giroud still left the field to a standing ovation 10 minutes later, but LAFC failed to equalize without him in its first match back from a winless three-game stint at the Club World Cup.

LAFC scored one goal in the entire FIFA tournament, but still netted at least $9.5 million for earning the final spot in the field. Back in Los Angeles, its nine-match unbeaten run in league play ended with even more offensive frustration against Vancouver.

Takaoka secured his 10th clean sheet for the depleted Whitecaps, who won for just the second time in six matches while falling out of first place in the Western Conference. Vancouver doesn't have key contributors Brian White, Jayden Nelson and Sebastian Berhalter due to Gold Cup international duty.

Sabbi scored in the 20th minute with an exceptional effort, starting a counterattack with a midfield steal before controlling Jeevan Badwal's pass in mid-air on the run and scoring his first goal since April 12. It was Badwal's first career MLS assist.

Backup goalkeeper David Ochoa made his first appearance for LAFC in place of Hugo Lloris, who got the day off after playing the entire Club World Cup.

FOOT NOTES: The Caps shut out LAFC at BMO Stadium for the first time — just the fourth time in the past two seasons that LAFC has been held scoreless at home. … The Whitecaps are back in action Friday when they face the host L.A. Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif.

{allcanada} Slywka lifts Argos past Redblacks for first win of season

OTTAWA - It was far from pretty, but the Toronto Argonauts finally picked up their first win of the CFL season with a 29-16 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Sunday.

"I thought the defence, you know, pretty much dominated the game," said Argos coach Ryan Dinwiddie. "They played really well. You know Derek (Slywka) changed the game with those two touchdowns."

Those two touchdowns were keys to the Argos (1-3-0) victory.

Slywka scored two defensive majors for the Argos, one off a fumble recovery and another on a blocked field goal return.

"It's kind of crazy," said Slywka. "Going into this game I was just thinking, like, whatever it takes and when you get an opportunity to make a play you gotta try to take advantage of it."

Argos' quarterback Nick Arbuckle had a decent night going 18-for-25 for 269 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

"Well he did some decent things, but, I mean, we couldn't get in a rhythm," said Dinwiddie. "And, you know, the receivers didn't help him out much either."

Ottawa's Dustin Crum didn't have much help on his side either, although the Redblacks' quarterback put up decent numbers going 20-for-30 for 235 yards and one interception., He ran the ball eight times for 60 yards and one TD. Crum endured a punishing night though, taking five sacks.

"I think we made mistakes at costly times, and they did a good job taking advantage of it," said Crum. "I don't think you can expect to win (when you) make that many mistakes, especially in the moments when we did."

With the Argos leading 4-0 Ottawa appeared ready to score early in the second quarter when Crum hit Kalil Pimpleton for a 15-yard gain, but as Pimpleton fought for extra yards, he fumbled at the Toronto five-yard line. Slywka scooped it up and raced the length of the field for an Argos touchdown.

"There are a lot of plays throughout the game and, you know, opportunities to win the game," Pimpleton said. "But, you know, at the end of the day protecting the ball is part of my job and that's my number 1 priority."

The Redblacks also failed to capitalize on a punt block that allowed them to recover the ball deep in Toronto territory, but failed to generate any points.

Down 18-3 at the half, Ottawa got into field goal position on the opening drive of the second half only to see Lewis Ward's kick blocked and Slywka return it 120 yards for a touchdown, stretching the Argos' lead to 25-3.

Redblacks head coach Bob Dyce looked visibly frustrated as he addressed the media.

"At the end of the day I gotta do a better job of teaching these guys the urgency of opportunities, because at the end of the day you can't think we'll get it next time," he said. "You know what I mean, you've got to seize every opportunity, to grasp it and squeeze it and make the most of it."

Ottawa went on to add a field goal and finally had success in the red zone late in the third, as Crum led a seven-play drive capped by his one-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 25-13.

Lirim Hajrullahu added a 43-yard field goal in the fourth and Ward responded with his own 40-yarder to make it 28-16 and Ottawa conceded a single on a missed Argos field goal to round out the scoring.

With identical records, the Argos and Redblacks both spoke of trying to find their game and start to build momentum moving forward.

"You can only hope one win leads to another and that's all we need," said Toronto's DaVaris Daniels. "It's good to see this on the road. Never easy to get a win on the road, and we're happy with the results."

For the Redblacks it's back to the drawing board as they try to find some much needed consistency to their game. Jovan Santos-Knox spoke about the difficulty of getting wins after Labour Day.

"We got to definitely put the foot on the pedal and, you know, ramp it up a little bit," said Santos-Knox. "You know try to make something shake."
