REGINA — Boris Bede kicked five field goals and the Montreal Alouettes snapped their 13-game losing streak with a 23-17 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders Saturday night.

Bede's fifth field goal of the night snuffed a late bid for a comeback victory by the Roughriders and pushed the Alouettes' lead to eight with less than three minutes remaining.

Montreal's last victory came in the 2017 season when it beat the Toronto Argonauts 21-9 on August 11.

The Riders, led by No. 3 quarterback David Watford, were unable to find a late score. Watford did lead a late drive into Montreal territory before Najee Murray intercepted a deep pass attempt to Duron Carter with one minute remaining.

Montreal improved to 1-2 on the season. The Riders have lost two in a row and are 1-2.

Trailing 17-6 after three quarters, the Riders were sparked by a 53-yard punt return by Christion Jones, a play that set up Watford and the offence at the Montreal 17-yard line.

Two plays later, Watford hooked up with Naaman Roosevelt for an acrobatic five-yard touchdown pass. The two-point convert failed and the Riders trailed 17-12.

After the Riders defence forced a turnover deep in Montreal's end, Saskatchewan was again poised to strike. However, a Watford pass attempt to a wide-open Caleb Holley ricocheted off the goal post and fell to the turf.

Saskatchewan settled for a Brett Lauther field goal, which cut the deficit to 17-15 with nine minutes remaining in the game.

Montreal's backup quarterback, Jeff Mathews, pushed back and led Montreal on a scoring drive, capped by Bede's fourth field goal that stretched the lead to 20-15 with five minutes to go.

On Montreal's next possession, Mathews again led the team on another scoring drive that ended with a Bede field goal.

Watford replaced an ineffective Brandon Bridge to start the third quarter.

Bridge struggled for the Riders in his first start at quarterback this season. He was intercepted twice in the first half and was eventually replaced by the rookie.

Mathews came in for starter Drew Willy late in the third quarter. Willy was sacked on a second-down play and was helped off the field. He later jogged to the locker room and did not return to the game.

Lauther kicked three field goals for Saskatchewan.

A Montreal loss on Saturday would have tied them with the Shreveport Pirates (1994) for the third-longest losing streak in CFL history.

The Riders will host Hamilton (2-1) on Thursday, while Montreal is at home to Ottawa (1-1) on Friday.

{allcanada} Smoak's walk-off leads Jays past Tigers

TORONTO — Justin Smoak didn't want Saturday afternoon's game to stretch into Saturday night.

So the Blue Jays first baseman ended it as soon as he could.

Smoak led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run, lifting Toronto to a 4-3 comeback victory over the Detroit Tigers.

"Honestly nobody wants to play extra innings so to be able to do it in the ninth, get it over with, it's always a good feeling," Smoak said with a laugh.

Smoak sent a 1-0 fastball from Joe Jimenez (3-1) to the right-field seats, sending the 27,066 fans into a frenzy under a closed roof at Rogers Centre. The stadium's retractable dome remained shut for the game due to an extreme heat warning in place for Toronto, where the temperature reached 31 degrees C.

The walk-off homer was the second of Smoak's career and first since 2016. And it came at a time when Smoak seems to be finding his groove again at the plate after batting .197 over his last 22 games.

"June hadn't been great to me but honestly it's just about being ready to hit again," Smoak said. "I feel like I went through a time there where I wasn't aggressive and kind of got me in that little bit of a funk. So I'm just trying to be aggressive and it's been better as of late."

Manager John Gibbons said it was "a matter of time" before Smoak returned to form.

"We put him down in the fifth spot (of the batting order) and he's kind of taken off," Gibbons said. "Not that that has anything to do with it, it's just the timing probably."

Randal Grichuk, on the other hand, capped a hot June streak with a two-run homer for the Blue Jays (39-43), tying the game in the fifth.

Devon Travis drove in Toronto's first run earlier in the inning, plating Kevin Pillar on a groundout.

Grichuk, who joined the Blue Jays via an off-season trade, came into the game batting .316 with seven homers and 18 RBI's since June 3. The Jays right-fielder had a rough start to the season and missed all of May with a knee strain.

He came off the disabled list on June 1 and has improved in virtually every aspect of his game since then.

"He's laying off the bad breaking balls," Gibbons said of Grichuk's turnaround. "Early on he was just free swinging too much and chasing those all the time ... But I think he put too much added pressure on himself, naturally (when) you come to a new town to play in.

"But yeah he's feeling really good now. That just goes to show you how much confidence plays a part in his game."

Jays reliever Seunghwan Oh (4-2) pitched the top of the ninth for the win.

Sam Gaviglio went seven strong innings for Toronto, allowing three runs and four hits. He also walked three batters and struck out five.

Former Toronto prospect Matt Boyd started for Detroit and allowed three runs, four hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings.

Boyd was selected by the Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2013 MLB draft and was traded to Detroit in 2015 as part of the deal that sent ace David Price to Toronto.

He's also a former college teammate of Gaviglio's at Oregon State.

"We had some text messages exchanged," Gaviglio said when asked about facing Boyd. "We talked about getting dinner after the game as well."

John Hicks hit a solo homer for the Tigers (36-48) in the second inning and Nicholas Castellanos added a two-run shot in the third.

The Blue Jays have won 10 of their last 11 home games following a 1-10 stretch at Rogers Centre.

"I feel like we have a pretty good team," Smoak said. "It's just a matter of going out there and winning ball games, it's been good as of late. I wish we could have gotten to Boyd a little better. He was good against us today."

NOTES: Blue Jays catcher Luke Maile threw out two Detroit base stealers. ... Boyd started two games for Jays in 2015, pitching to a 14.85 earned-run average over 6 2/3 innings, before being traded. ... Toronto continues its four-game home series against the Tigers Sunday afternoon. J.A. Happ will start for the Blue Jays while Detroit counters with Jordan Zimmerman.

{allcanada} Piatti, Silva score as Impact win third straight

MONTREAL — Ignacio Piatti and Alejandro Silva scored in the second half as the Montreal Impact extended their winning streak to three games with a 2-0 victory that ended Sporting Kansas City's nine-game unbeaten run.

The Impact (7-11), coming off back-to-back wins over Orlando, handed Western Conference-leading Sporting (9-3-5) a first defeat since April 28. Kansas City's unbeaten run included two wins in U.S. Open Cup play.

It was Montreal's fourth win in five games, with clean sheets in all four wins.

Piatti scored his ninth goal of the season and his fourth in the last three matches in the 54th minute while Uruguayan midfielder Silva got his first MLS goal from the penalty spot in the 70th.

The Impact looked to have wasted a glorious chance as Saphir Taider and Matteo Mancosu couldn't control a loose ball in front of the Kansas City net, but Silva managed to slip it to the onrushing Piatti for a bullet shot from the edge of the penalty area that went off the crossbar and landed just over the line.

Daniel Lovitz jumped on a loose ball in the area and looked likely to score when Ike Opara stuck out a foot to trip the Impact fullback. Piatti normally takes penalties, but it was Silva who stepped up to the spot and scored on a slow, rolling shot.

The Impact lost holding midfielder Samuel Piette to an apparent foot injury in the 38th minute after a tackle from Yohan Croizet. He tried to walk it off but moments later was substituted by another Canadian, Shamit Shome.

It was an uneventful first half with Piatti getting off a good shot from the edge of the 18-yard box in the ninth minute that was right at goalie Tom Melia. Opara came close in the 29th when his header from a Graham Zusi corner kick went wide and Croizet shot just over the bar from distance in the 37th.

Water breaks were called to keep players hydrated in oppressive humidity.

{allcanada} Domi will wear No. 13 for Canadiens as tribute to Maple Leafs great

BROSSARD, Quebec -- Max Domi playing for the Montreal Canadiens will have a couple of their biggest former rivals rooting for them.

The 23-year-old forward, acquired from the Arizona Coyotes in a trade for forward Alex Galchenyuk on June 15, is the son of Tie Domi, who played 11 seasons as a forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Max on Saturday stood in front of the locker room stall displaying his name and the No. 13 jersey he will wear with the Canadiens as a tribute to his boyhood idol, Maple Leafs center Mats Sundin.

"It's a little bit weird to see 13, the last name Domi on the back of a Habs jersey, but I don't really care, I think it looks great," Domi said. "It's a great number. I wore it my whole childhood. I switched to 16 back when I was 12 years old when I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, as a tribute to Bobby Clarke. Obviously 16 is retired here (for Henri Richard and Elmer Lach) so I was shocked that 13 wasn't retired yet and I was like, 'All right, well I'll switch back to that one.' And I'm really excited."

Max, who was born in Winnipeg, had 135 points (36 goals, 99 assists) in 222 games for Arizona, which selected him with the No. 12 pick in the 2012 NHL Draft. Tie had 245 points (104 goals, 141 assists) playing 1,020 NHL games for the New York Rangers, Winnipeg Jets and Toronto, which selected him with the No. 27 pick in the 1988 NHL Draft.

"I definitely can't change my last name, that's for sure, but it's part of who I am and there's a lot of positives that come with that," Max said. "I've got a lot of childhood experiences and memories that you can't make up, getting to go to the Air Canada Centre and getting to call someone like Mats Sundin, like, your uncle, pretty much. I mean he still sends me little workouts to do throughout the summer. And if I don't shoot the puck -- which I didn't shoot the puck that well last year -- he's the first guy to text me."

Max Domi Montreal Canadiens dressing room 6/30/18

Domi said he will try to get his father to pose with a Canadiens jersey at his first game at Bell Centre. Montreal's regular-season home opener is Oct. 11 against the Los Angeles Kings.

"If you would have told anyone in their right mind 5-10 years ago that Tie Domi was going to be a Montreal Canadiens fan, they would have looked at you and laughed and said you were crazy," Domi said. "But I'm his son and I'm representing one of the most historic franchises in all sports and he's the biggest Habs fan in the world now. So that's the reality and I'm super-excited to be a part of it, and he's just as pumped."

Domi visited Montreal's practice rink Saturday for the first time since he was traded.

"I mean top to bottom, you've got a general manager (Marc Bergevin) that's been a part of Stanley Cup teams and stuff, and you've got a coach (Claude Julien) that's won a Stanley Cup (with the Boston Bruins)," Domi said. "And then you've got older guys, guys like Shea Weber, who's been a guy that I've been looking up to before I even played in the NHL. You've got the best goalie in the NHL (Carey Price), you've got guys like Brendan Gallagher, guys like [Andrew Shaw], I mean, the list really goes on.

"You've got all the young kids coming up, and just to be a part of that and then to fit in is going to be pretty special. So a huge honor, I'm really, really excited, and I'm not really sure what kind of role I'll have, but whatever that is I'm going to try and do that to the best of my ability."

{allcanada} Toronto FC waive little-used Mino, open international spot

Toronto FC has waived little-used midfielder Mariano Mino, opening up an international spot on its roster.

The 24-year-old Argentine made just one appearance for the MLS champions and was an unused substitute 10 times after signing a first-team contract April 20. He played 25 minutes in Toronto's 5-1 loss at Houston on April 21, when TFC fielded a reserve side ahead of the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final.

He made five appearances for Toronto FC 2 of the USL this season after coming on loan from Uruguay's Sud America on March 15.

Mino, who was making US$54,500 at TFC, also played for Boca Unidos, a second-division Argentine side.

After falling just short in the CONCACAF Champions League, injury-ravaged Toronto has struggled in MLS play. At 4-8-3, it stands 10th in the Eastern Conference — six points below the playoff line.

Toronto hosts the third-place New York Red Bulls (9-4-2) on Sunday.

{allcanada} Wild’s Ennis, Canadiens’ Mason on buyout waivers

The Minnesota Wild placed forward Tyler Ennis on unconditional waivers to buy out his contract and free up salary-cap space on the eve of free agency.

A person with direct knowledge of the move told The Associated Press on Saturday that Ennis and newly acquired Montreal Canadiens goaltender Steve Mason were put on buyout waivers at noon. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the transactions had not been announced.

Minnesota saves more than $2.4 million against the $79.5 million salary cap next season by buying out the final year of Ennis' contract. The 28-year-old, who was due to make $3.65 million and count $4.6 million on the salary cap, had 22 points in 73 games with the Wild after being acquired from Buffalo a year ago.

Ennis has 258 points in 492 games and could be a value free agent addition for a team looking for depth down the middle.

Mason was not long for Montreal after the Canadiens acquired the 30-year-old goaltender in a trade with the Winnipeg Jets earlier Saturday. The Canadiens used their abundance of salary-cap space to take on Mason's contract and acquire young Finnish forward Joel Armia.

Montreal will have a cap hit of just under $1.4 million over the next two seasons for Mason, who becomes an unrestricted free agent. He will be an option for teams looking for a backup goaltender or someone to share the load, like Boston and Carolina.

{allcanada} Canadiens acquire Joel Armia, Steve Mason from Jets

The Montreal Canadiens have acquired goaltender Steve Mason and forward Joel Armia in a trade with the Winnipeg Jets.

As part of the trade, the Jets are also sending a seventh-round pick in 2019 and a fourth-round pick in 2020 to Montreal. In return, Montreal is sending AHL defenceman Simon Bourque to the Jets.

Mason, 30, is coming off a disappointing first season with the Jets, who signed him to a two-year contract last summer that carries a $4.1 million cap hit. Mason was expected to be the starter in Winnipeg last season, but a slow start gave Connor Hellebuyck an opportunity and he took it. By the end of the season, Hellebuyck was a Vezina Trophy finalist and Mason was left to be the backup.

Mason also missed some time with concussions, which limited him to only 13 games with the Jets. He posted a 5-6-1 record with a 3.24 goals-against average and .906 save percentage.

Shortly after the trade was announced, the Canadiens placed Mason on waivers for the purpose of a buyout.

Armia, 25, is a winger who was originally a first-round pick by the Buffalo Sabres and was acquired by Winnipeg as part of the Evander Kane trade. In 180 NHL games he has 26 goals and 58 points.

Bourque, 21, was a sixth-round pick by the Canadiens in 2015. In his first AHL season last year, Bourque had three assists in 46 games.

{allcanada} Reilly throws three touchdowns as Eskimos crush Lions

EDMONTON — Quarterback Mike Reilly passed for three touchdowns and took one in himself as the Edmonton Eskimos overcame a sloppy start to record a 41-22 victory over the B.C. Lions on Friday.

Reilly completed 22-of-30 passes for 326 yards as the Eskimos improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Lions are 1-1.

The Lions started the game with a single on a 37-yard missed field-goal attempt by Tyler Long.

B.C. got the ball back when Reilly was picked off by T.J. Lee, eventually leading to a one-yard touchdown plunge by Jeremiah Johnson.

Edmonton continued to implode, fumbling the ball away to Dyshawn Davis on its own 23-yard line on the ensuing kick-off. Long kicked a 14-yard field goal to put the Lions up 11-0 midway through the first.

The Esks got on the board when B.C. conceded a safety.

Long started the second with 39-yard field goal, but then hit the uprights on his next attempt.

Edmonton finally got its offence going late in the second, when Reilly found Natey Adjei for a 14-yard passing TD. Then he hit Kenny Stafford for a 13-yard strike through the air with just 30 seconds left and added a two-point convert pass to Duke Williams to take a 17-14 lead into the half.

The Esks picked up where they left off in the third, with a three-yard TD run by C.J Gable, although the convert kick failed.

Edmonton's momentum remained late in the third when Reilly completed a 64-yard pass-and-run into the end zone to Williams, who also caught another two-point convert.

The Lions finally ended Edmonton's run of 29 straight points with a one-yard TD by backup QB Cody Fajardo to start the fourth.

Edmonton bounced back with a one-yard rushing major of their own by Reilly.

The Eskimos added a late Sean Whyte field goal.

Both teams are back in action again next Saturday, as the Lions head to Winnipeg and the Eskimos are in Toronto.

Notes: Lions defensive end Odell Willis made his return to Edmonton after being traded away in the off-season. Willis played for the Eskimos for five seasons… B.C., with former Edmonton GM Ed Hervey in charge, has nine former Eskimos on its roster.

{allcanada} Stroman gets first win as Jays edge Tigers

TORONTO — The old Marcus Stroman — the swagger-filled, confidence-loaded, shimmy-shaking right-hander — returned on Friday night at Rogers Centre.

The Toronto starter earned his first win of the season with seven innings of five-hit ball as the Blue Jays held off the Detroit Tigers 3-2.

Stroman (1-5) was in form in his second start after a 39-game stint on the disabled list due to right shoulder fatigue. He allowed two earned runs, didn't walk a batter and struck out four.

Perhaps more importantly, he had that oomph on the mound that was missing earlier this season.

"He looks like the old guy," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "Everything is coming out better and he's got a little strut going — like John Travolta."

Justin Smoak hit a two-run homer as Toronto kicked off the four-game series by winning its ninth home game in 10 tries. Seunghwan Oh struck out the side in the eighth inning and Tyler Clippard worked the ninth for his fifth save.

Stroman, who threw five innings for a no-decision in his last start, was in control against the Tigers on a muggy summer evening.

"I feel great, I feel back to myself," he said. "It's a relief just being able to be myself out there, kind of do everything that I want to do out there without having to worry about it."

He threw 65 of his 90 pitches for strikes.

"When he's bowing his neck and sticking his chest out, that's when he's at his best," Gibbons said. "That's just who he is."

Randal Grichuk had two of Toronto's eight hits. The Blue Jays reached the season's midway point with a 38-43 record.

Detroit (36-47), which extended its losing streak to a season-high 10 games, managed six hits in all. It's the Tigers' first 10-game skid in almost 15 years.

"The guys are really trying," said Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire. "They're bothered out there and they're frustrated and they want to win. The guys are really pushing hard in the dugout but it's just not happening right now."

Detroit opened the scoring with a single run in the third inning. Jacoby Jones reached base after third baseman Yangervis Solarte double-clutched a grounder and was late with the throw.

The Tigers worked the hit-and-run to perfection as Jose Iglesias singled to put runners on the corners. Jones came home when Dixon Machado hit into a double play.

Former Blue Jays left-hander Francisco Liriano (3-4) rolled through the first three innings before getting into trouble in the fourth.

Solarte reached on an infield single but was thrown out at third by Nicholas Castellanos after Kendrys Morales lifted a single to right field. Smoak followed by taking a 1-0 pitch deep for his 10th homer of the year.

The Blue Jays didn't let up, loading the bases on a Kevin Pillar single and walks to Russell Martin and Aledmys Diaz.

Devon Travis hit into a fielder's choice but a Grichuk dribbler down the third-base line was enough to bring Martin home. Teoscar Hernandez struck out to end the inning.

Detroit halved the lead in the seventh when Jeimer Candelario took Stroman deep with a solo shot. It was his 12th homer of the season.

Liriano allowed seven hits and three earned runs over six innings. He issued four walks and had four strikeouts.

Clippard gave up an infield single to Leonys Martin in the ninth before retiring the next three Tigers in order.

Notes: Stroman picked up his 500th career strikeout when he fanned James McCann in the fifth inning. ... Announced attendance was 24,068. ... The game took two hours 33 minutes to play. ... Right-hander Sam Gaviglio (2-2, 3.98 earned-run average) is scheduled to start for the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon against left-hander Matthew Boyd (4-6, 4.15). ... The Blue Jays selected infielder Darnell Sweeney from triple-A Buffalo before the game. He wore No. 38.

{allcanada} Masoli throws for 369 yards to lead Tiger-Cats past Bombers

HAMILTON — Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli completed 31-of-41 passes for 369 yards and a touchdown to lead the Tiger-Cats past the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 31-17 on Friday in Hamilton's home opener.

Canadian Mercer Timmis ran in two touchdowns for the Tiger-Cats (2-1), while Lirim Hajrullahu connected on four field goals.

Running back Andrew Harris led Winnipeg's (1-2) offence with 66 yards and a touchdown. Kicker Justin Medlock had a field goal and two converts.

Rookie QB Chris Streveler rushed in a touchdown but managed only 146 passing yards a week after he was one of the CFL's top performers with 246 passing yards and three TDs in a 56-10 rout in Montreal.

Masoli has passed for more than 300 yards in eight consecutive games, tying Montreal's Anthony Calvillo (2012) and Edmonton's Mike Reilly (2015-16) for second most in CFL history.

Montreal's Sam Etcheverry (1956) and Saskatchewan's Kent Austin (1991) are tied for first all time with nine.

Masoli aired out a 25-yard pass to Toliver with less than five minutes left in the third quarter to make it 28-10. That touchdown pass took Masoli to 308 yards in the game to move up in the record books.

"He's been the best quarterback in the league, I think, for the last 12 games," said Hamilton head coach June Jones after practice on Thursday. "I don't think he even thinks about it, he just wants to win."

Hajrullahu poured it on with eight seconds left in the third quarter, making a 38-yard field goal for a 31-10 lead.

Streveler called his own number with 4:38 left to play in the game, rushing 15 yards for a touchdown. Medlock's conversion cut the lead to 31-17. The 58-yard, five-play drive ended six consecutive two-and-outs for the Blue Bombers.

That was Winnipeg's last gasp in the game as the Ticats would hold the Bombers scoreless the rest of the way.

Winnipeg opened scoring in the first quarter, as Marcus Sayles intercepted a Masoli pass at Hamilton's 15-yard line, taking it back 38 yards to put the Blue Bomers into scoring positon. Three plays later, Harris dove across the goal-line for a one-yard touchdown. After Medlock's convert, the Bombers led 7-0.

Masoli responded with an 88-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard TD plunge by Timmis, who's from nearby Burlington, Ont. Hajrullahu's kick after tied it with 1:33 to go in the quarter.

Medlock connected on a 38-yard field goal 3:48 into the second quarter to re-establish Winnipeg's lead.

A 50-yard Hajrullahu field goal — with the wind at his back — tied it up just over two minutes later to salvage a 38-yard drive that sputtered out before the Ticats could get near the red zone.

Hamilton slotback Sean Thomas-Erlington made Winnipeg defensive back Taylor Loffler look silly in a highlight-reel play, hurdling over his tackle in a 23-yard rush. It was a critical play in a 76-yard drive by the Tiger-Cats that led to a 17-yard Hajrullahu field goal and a 13-10 lead.

Hajrullahu added to that lead in the dying seconds of the half, booting the ball 42 yards for a field goal.

Timmis scored his second touchdown of the game 5:20 into the second half, his fourth of the season, on a four-yard run. He was virtually untouched as he dodged Winnipeg's defence to make it 22-10. Masoli's pass to Jalen Saunders for a two-point conversion was incomplete.

{allcanada} Canucks showing interest in Antoine Roussel, Jay Beagle

The Vancouver Canucks aren't expected to be big spenders when NHL free agency opens Sunday, but they do have plenty of cap space to work with and have several vacant roster spots they need to fill.

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and Sportsnet 650's Rick Dhaliwal, the team is showing interest in forward Antoine Roussel.

Roussel has spent his entire career with the Dallas Stars after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2012.

The Canucks were not known for their physicality this past season and Roussel would certainly help in that area if the two sides do, in fact, agree on a deal. Roussel has 806 penalty minutes in 413 career regular-season NHL games. The 28-year-old registered five goals and 12 assists in 73 games this past season while averaging just 12:26 in ice-time per game, his lowest totals since his 39-game rookie campaign.

Roussel is coming off a four-year contract that paid him an average of $2 million per season.

Dhaliwal also noted Jay Beagle is another player the Canucks are looking at, although there will be plenty of competition for the coveted depth centre.

Beagle's stock rose during the Capitals' Stanley Cup run as the 32-year-old played a key role centring Washington's fourth line. His cap hit the past three seasons has been $1.75 million.

"We've gotten to a place now where we've got a very good group of exciting young players, and that continues to build," Canucks president of hockey operations Trevor Linden told Sportsnet's Iain MacIntyre earlier this week when discussing free agency plans. "It's just a matter of being patient and sticking with it now. July 1 is not a day to build. You can add some pieces. But if you look at good teams, the core is usually drafted.

"We need to think about getting better from within. We need to get our young players to take a step and be better. Our wins next year will be from the growth of young players. That's where we are. July 1 isn't a day where we're going to build our team. It's a patient day for us."

{allcanada} Redblacks' Hebert suspended one game

TORONTO — The Canadian Football League has suspended Ottawa Redblacks linebacker Kyries Hebert for one game for a hit on Calgary receiver DaVaris Daniels.

The incident occurred in Calgary's 24-14 home win over Ottawa on Thursday.

Hebert launched himself into the air and led with the crown of his helmet in the offending hit while Daniels was in a defenceless position.

The discipline comes after CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie held a hearing with Hebert and a representative of the Canadian Football League Players' Association via telephone.

"As a league and a leader in football, we need to eliminate these type of hits from the game," Ambrosie said in a statement. "A play like this puts unnecessary risk to a player's safety and has no place in the game."

The ban is effective immediately, meaning Hebert will be unavailable for Ottawa's July 6 game at Montreal.

{allcanada} Whitecaps' Davies among MLS All-Stars

Vancouver Whitecaps Canadian midfielder Alphonso Davies has been named to the 2018 MLS All-Star team that will face Juventus at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The 17-year-old was added to the team as a commissioner selection, one of two players picked by Don Garber to join the squad.

Davies would be the fourth youngest player to appear in an MLS All-Star Game.  He has made 17 appearances for the Whitecaps in 2018, including 14 starts.

Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco has been named to the All-Star team for the fourth consecutive season and will face his former club in the game.

The 31-year-old has seven goals and 10 assists for Toronto FC in 20 games this season across all competitions.

The Montreal Impact will be represented in Atlanta by Ignacio Piatti who is heading to the All-Star game for the third consecutive season.

"I'm very happy to be selected for my third MLS All-Star game," said Piatti in a release. "It's great to be a part of this game and spend time with some of the best players in the league. I would like to thank my teammates because we are a team, and without them I wouldn't be able to go."

Piatti has eight goals and six assists in 15 starts this season for the Impact.

{allcanada} Whitecaps D Henry has come a long way since career-threatening injury

VANCOUVER — Doneil Henry finds himself in a much better place physically and mentally than he was a year ago.

Last year at this time the Vancouver Whitecaps defender was in London, England, rehabbing a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He went over 15 months without playing a game and his soccer career hung in limbo.

"I'm definitely in a better place and a better environment," Henry said this week as the Whitecaps prepared for Sunday's Major League Soccer game against the Colorado Rapids at BC Place Stadium. "The best thing is I'm injury free."

Henry has started the last three games at centre back for Vancouver. He was one of the few players to perform well in last week's 4-0 loss in Philadelphia which ended a six-game unbeaten streak.

"We were winning and ate a little bit of humble pie," said Henry. "We have to go back to doing the hard stuff, the stuff you don't get glory for. That's where character is shown."

Henry, 25, could be the poster boy for showing character.

Back in 2010 the Brampton, Ont., native become the first player signed by Toronto FC developed in the club's academy program. He would go on to make 73 starts for Toronto in 93 first-team appearances, scoring five goals.

Henry was Canada's U-20 player of the year in 2012 and has over 20 caps with the senior men's team.

In 2015 he went to Europe to join West Ham United. He played one game then was loaned to Blackburn Rovers. His season ended after three games with a hamstring injury.

The next year he was loaned to Danish club AC Horsens but Henry tore his ACL in his second game.

"There were a lot of hardships I dealt with," Henry said. "It was a test of my character. I continued to stay strong and faithful in the process."

Vancouver acquired Henry last December. He played some exhibition games then was loaned to the Ottawa Fury FC of the United Soccer League for conditioning.

Henry's first game as a Whitecap was Vancouver's 2-1 win on the road against Colorado on June 1.

The struggling Rapids come to Vancouver with a win and draw in their last two games after losing eight straight matches.

"We never lost confidence throughout that run," defender Tommy Smith told the Colorado website. "We just carried on doing the right things."

At six-foot-two and 180-pounds, Henry has size and speed. He's comfortable on the ball, capable of starting the Whitecaps' transition game and is a tough tackler.

Head coach Carl Robinson said Henry is the kind of player he likes having on his team.

"Doneil nearly had his career taken away form him," said Robinson. "He's been at the bottom. He knows what it feels like. He doesn't want to go back there, that's why he puts in the hard work and now gets the rewards.

"As a player you don't learn that until it's either taken away from your or nearly taken away form you. Some don't realize it at all until it's too late."

Henry went to Europe as a young player full of swagger. He's returned a little older, wiser and with a better appreciation of the game.

"Sometimes the game can be really cruel to you," he said. "I don't take any of this for granted. I have played top-flight football. I know what it takes.

"Sports is all about staying relevant. I was irrelevant for two years because of injury. I'm happy to be with this club. They have treated me really well since I've been back here."

{allcanada} Esks seeking answers as they look to right the ship against Lions

EDMONTON — Given injuries and all the new faces, it might have been tempting for the Edmonton Eskimos to lean on excuses after having their defence dominated last week.

You can watch all the action LIVE tonight at 10pm ET/7pm PT across the TSN Network and streaming on TSN.ca or listen on TSN Radio 1040 Vancouver.

Instead, the Eskimos spent the days since looking for answers, knowing Jonathon Jennings and the B.C. Lions will be eager to provide another test Friday at Commonwealth Stadium.

Between off-season personnel changes and having five starting defensive players, including both cornerbacks, on the six-game injured list, the defence the Eskimos put on the field last Friday was no match for Jeremiah Masoli and the Hamilton Tiger-cats, who waltzed to a 38-21 win.

"First of all, in our culture that's never going to be tolerated," said veteran linebacker J.C. Sherritt. "Feeling sorry for yourself, I mean that's the quickest way out the door. We don't tolerate that here for a second.

"You've just got to learn from your mistakes. It's a very long season. I was here when B.C. was 0-5 (2011) and it was the worst team I'd ever seen in my life. I watched them become unbeatable and Grey Cup champions. That's the CFL. It's who can improve every week, who can learn from their mistakes."

Masoli passed for 332 yards and three touchdowns and the Ticats rushed for 196 yards to roll up 528 yards of total offence. That loss came on the heels of what was anything but an airtight defensive display in a 33-30 season-opening win over Winnipeg.

More of the same won't do against the Lions and Jennings, who opened the season with 22-10 win over the Montreal Alouettes.

"For us, it's just a matter of learning, understanding what we have to do and being consistent," said defensive co-ordinator Mike Benevides. "We were victimized. We weren't good enough. That's my responsibility.

"In Week 2, we were from being as good as we can be, but we need to make sure we make it right tomorrow."

Jennings, who went 20-for-24 for 183 yards and two touchdowns against the Alouettes, faces an Edmonton defence that ranks seventh in total offence allowed per game (409.5 yards) and sits eighth in rushing yards allowed per game (166.5).

"There's things here and there that we've seen on film that might be able to work," B.C. receiver Bryan Burnham told bclions.com after practice Wednesday. "But we know that after that (Hamilton) game they're going to come hungry.

"They're going to come ready to play, so we've just got to make sure we're on our P's and Q's and, you know, making plays, doing the right thing, not making any mistakes because they're going to come fired up and ready to get a win."

Statistics aside, Edmonton's defence – Almondo Sewell is the only returning defensive lineman in front of a secondary that is dealing with injuries to corners Johnny Adams and Arjen Colquhoun as well as Forrest Hightower — simply hasn't made enough plays.

"I think that there's tremendous lessons to be learned," Benevides said. "In the end, they've got God-given ability. Just go play. Just understand that if you play fast, do things as quickly as you can to the best of your ability, good things are going to occur. If we have 12 guys running to the football, good things will come."

Jennings, like Masoli, is capable of buying time with his legs, if need be. He rushed for a career-high 57 yards against Montreal.

"What these guys are doing so well, in Jennings and Masoli, is they extend plays but their eyes are always downfield," Sherritt said. "That's what's scary. Jennings is only going to run when it's his last option.

"We're aware of where he's going but we've got to stay in coverage the whole time because if you get too antsy to come off on him he'll make you pay."

B.C. (1-0) at EDMONTON (1-1)

Friday, Commonwealth Stadium

WILLIS RETURNS — Defensive end Odell Willis, who has big career sack totals (87) and a bigger personality, faces the Esks for the first time since being traded last February. The self-proclaimed Mayor of Commonwealth, who spent five seasons in Edmonton, was dealt to Ottawa and then to B.C. during the off-season.

REUNION — The Lions have nine former Eskimos on the roster with Willis, Garry Peters, Marcell Young, Cory Watson, Anthony Orange, Otha Foster, Mike Benson, Joel Figueroa and Chris Greaves. Then, there's GM Ed Hervey.

FIREWORKS — Edmonton swept the Lions in three high-scoring meetings in 2017. The Eskimos prevailed 30-27 and 37-26 before winning 35-29 in OT at B.C. Place on Oct. 21, a game in which they scored 22 consecutive points.

DUAL THREAT — Derel Walker and Duke Williams are first and second in CFL receiving yardage. Walker has 14 receptions for 232 yards and Williams has eight catches for 179 yards.

TOUGH CROWD — The Lions have lost five straight games in Edmonton dating back to July 2013.
