{allcanada} Joni Mitchell Rushed to Hospital After Falling Ill at Los Angeles Home: Report

Joni Mitchell

Here's hoping that Joni Mitchell is back in the pink soon!

The 71-year-old Blue artist was reportedly rushed to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and remains in intensive care.

Per TMZ, which was first to report Mitchell's medical crisis, a call was made from the singer-songwriter's Los Angeles home at around 2:30 p.m. to report an unconscious female, but that the patient was alert on the ambulance ride to the hospital.

There has been no comment yet from Mitchell's rep.

Mitchell, who was born in Canada but become one of the most iconic personalities to come out of the 1960s-era L.A. music scene, is an eight-time Grammy winnner, including the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, and she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Her most recent studio album was 2007's Shine, but a number of compilations have been released since, including last year's four-disc Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, A Ballet, Waiting to Be Danced.

Joni Mitchell

The "Big Yellow Taxi" singer attended Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammys party back in February and she was honored last October at the UCLA Hammer Museum's 12th annual Gala in the Garden, which featured a performance by Sia.

"I think of myself as a painter first and a musician second," Mitchell said for the umpteenth time at the museum soiree.

Asked in 2010 about the common refrain that she's not covered more often because her songs are difficult to sing, Mitchell told the Los Angeles Times, "I'm a method actress in my songs, which is why it's hard to sing them. What I do is unusual: chordal movements that have never been used before, changing keys and modalities mid-song. But John [Kelly, creator of the tribute show Paved Paradise: The Art of Joni Mitchell] gets the spirit: You have to go to the brink of sadness but never fall into melodrama, then send in the clowns for a moment."

In the same interview, she explained her issue with her songs being considered "confessional."

"It's an ugly term—it's 'confessional' if you don't get it; if you do get it, you see yourself in the songs," Mitchell said. "I usually use 'I' as the narrator in my songs, but not all the 'I's' are me; they're characters. It's theater."

{allcanada} Vigneault: Byfuglien 'could have broken his neck'

WatchCo.com WatchCo.com

Video: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/vigneault-byfuglien-broken-neck/

It was only two days ago that Winnipeg Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien proved once again why he brings a completely unique set of tools to hockey. He was all over the place with Chicago Blackhawks literally bouncing off the physical American and he scored two goals, one a booming shot from the point.

Tuesday was an example of how he can be a bit of an enigma.

Late in the second period Byfuglien cross-checked Rangers forward J.T. Miller in the back of the head. The 30-year-old Byfuglien disguised it as a consequence of falling, but there's no denying he drilled a completely defenseless player on the ice for no reason.

Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault certainly didn't hide his disdain for the play when talking with the media after the game.

"(It was) violent, deliberate, could have broken his neck," said Vigneault. "I don't know what's going to happen, but it was one of the most vicious cross-checks I've seen this year."

According to Sportsnet's John Shannon the play will be given extra attention by the NHL Department of Player Safety.

{allcanada} Bonino, Vrbata help Canucks edge Predators

WatchCo.com WatchCo.com
Brad Pitt / Britney Spears / Colin Farrell / Angelina Jolie

NASHVILLE -- Nick Bonino and Radim Vrbata scored in the shootout to give the Vancouver Canucks a 5-4 win against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday.

Vancouver (45-27-5) remained in second place in the Pacific Division with 95 points; Nashville (47-22-9) is atop the Central Division with 103 points.

"I thought we played real well," Canucks coach Willie Desjardins said. "I thought they played hard early but I thought we really battled. We found a way to battle in the second, and then the third was a battle. They're a tough team to play. We were under siege quite a bit with our (defense), they were getting pressure. I thought we played hard the whole night."

The Canucks had to kill a five-minute penalty with 3:54 remaining and 1:06 into overtime after forward Alexandre Burrows was given a major penalty and game misconduct for a hit on Predators forward Paul Gaustad.

"We had a lot of guys selling out," Bonino said. "Especially after you've given up two (power-play) goals, to be able to get that kill and take it into an overtime and kill a 4-on-3, it was really big."

Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa, one of their best penalty killers, was given a 10-minute misconduct at the same time Burrows was ejected. Gaustad left the game after the hit from and did not return.

"I felt like we collided more than anything, but you never want to see someone go down," Burrows said. "I've been on the wrong side sometimes and you never want to see someone be down so hope he's alright. That was a big win by the boys. The boys battled hard tonight and found a way to kill that major."

Predators forward Mike Fisher tied the game 4-4 at 14:57 of the third period on a power play. Bonino tried to clear the puck out of the defensive zone, but it bounced off of Fisher and past Canucks goaltender Eddie Lack for Fisher's 19th goal.

Chris Higgins gave the Canucks a 4-3 lead at 5:48 of the third period on a one-timer off of a pass from Burrows. Higgins drove through the middle of the ice and redirected a feed past Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne for a power-play goal. It was Higgins' 12th goal of the season.

"It's hard to keep emotions in check, especially when you don't think some calls are going your way," Higgins said. "You get two guys thrown out on one play. I don't think I've ever seen that before. It certainly is difficult this time of year too, we need the two points. You try to remind yourself with everything going on that we need the win."

Burrows tied the game 3-3 at 1:23 of the third period on a shorthanded breakaway. Burrows hesitated, then put it past Rinne for his 16th goal.

Cody Franson opened the scoring on a power play 4:30 into the game on a wrist shot from the point. Forward Colin Wilson drove to the net and Franson shot the puck past Lack for his seventh goal of the season and first since being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"I think he's done well," Predators coach Peter Laviolette said. "He has a real good shot that he can get off quick. It's hard and finds the net and finds a way through. The power play had close to 20 shots on net and probably 30 attempts. There were so many good looks that I would've liked to have seen more."

Taylor Beck doubled Nashville's lead at 8:15 of the first period on a breakaway. Beck took a pass from Gaustad and sent a wrist shot that trickled through Lack's pads for his eighth goal.

Vancouver forward Lindey Vey scored to make it 2-1 at 4:04 of the second period on a wrist shot that beat Rinne through the five-hole. Vey skated into the Predators zone and his shot got around two defensemen for his 10th goal.

Canucks forward Jannik Hansen tied the game at 6:04 of the second on a slap shot that beat Rinne on the blocker side. Hansen used Predators defenseman Roman Josi as a screen and scored his 15th goal to make it 2-2.

Viktor Stalberg gave the Predators a one-goal lead with 29.4 seconds remaining in the second period on a wrist shot that beat Lack. Stalberg took a pass from defenseman Anton Volchenkov and shot from the right faceoff circle for his second goal.

"They have a great home record," Desjardins said of the Predators (28-8-3). "They're one of the top teams in the League. For us to come in after playing (Monday) night and getting behind, it just shows a lot of character in our team."

Predators defenseman Shea Weber missed his third consecutive game because of a lower-body injury and is day-to-day.

{allcanada} Lundqvist, Kreider help Rangers edge Jets

WatchCo.com WatchCo.com
Brad Pitt / Britney Spears / Colin Farrell / Angelina Jolie

WINNIPEG -- The New York Rangers ended a two-game skid and took over first place in the Eastern Conference with a 3-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets at MTS Centre on Tuesday.

New York erased two one-goal deficits to set up a 2-2 game before forward Chris Kreider slipped by Winnipeg defenseman Dustin Byfuglien on a rush and sent a backhand shot past goaltender Ondrej Pavelec with 3:46 left in the third period.

The Rangers (48-21-7), who clinched a playoff berth last Thursday, moved past the Montreal Canadiens into the Eastern Conference lead with 103 points. New York is eight points ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Winnipeg (39-26-12) is two points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Western Conference, but the Kings have a game in hand.

The Jets, who have lost two straight, are trying to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2007, when the franchise was known as the Atlanta Thrashers.

"Emotions are all high at this point," Jets coach Paul Maurice said when asked about the message he delivered to his players. "We just talked about how we're going to proceed."

New York's 25 road wins lead the NHL and match the franchise record, set last season. The Rangers have won seven of their past eight road games and are 22-6-1 in their past 29 games away from Madison Square Garden.

"We [had not] really been playing our brand of hockey," Kreider said. "[Before playing Winnipeg], we were rushing. We weren't patient, weren't poised, and I think we got back to the way we want to play tonight. It was more of a Ranger game."

Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves in his second start since returning from a neck injury. It was his first win since Feb. 2 against the Florida Panthers.

After allowing four goals in a road loss against the Boston Bruins on Saturday, Lundqvist bounced back against Winnipeg. He made 15 saves in the first period and fended off the Jets' third-period push.

"I'm happy with how the guys played in front of [Lundqvist] and were able to get the late goal to get him the win tonight," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said.

Pavelec made 21 saves.

Jim Slater scored on Winnipeg's fourth shot of the game for a 1-0 lead at 3:16 of the first period, but Mats Zuccarello tied it at 9:42 with his 15th goal.

"We didn't start the way we wanted," Vigneault said. "They had a really strong push. The good thing is that it got [Lundqvist] in the game early, I guess."

Lee Stempniak, who the Jets acquired from the Rangers in a trade March 1, put Winnipeg back on top 1:25 into the second period.

Derick Brassard's power-play goal at 10:13 of the second erased another one-goal lead for the Jets.

The Jets pounced on the Rangers early in the game. Winnipeg had a 10-3 shots advantage through the first seven minutes of the game, but Lundqvist stopped several in-close opportunities.

"This was a great test for us," Lundqvist said. "I thought that [Winnipeg] played a great game. They had speed. They played physically. They made it really tough for us, but I'm happy with the way we responded. After each [Winnipeg] goal, we settled in and started playing our game, our fast game."

Winnipeg took a 1-0 lead when Slater squeezed his bouncing rebound past Lundqvist. Two of Slater's four goals have come in the past three games.

"We just tried to weather the storm," said Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi, whose 10 blocked shots Tuesday were the most for the Rangers since the League started tracking the stat in the 2005-06 season. "We knew they would come out hard."

Down 1-0, Zuccarello broke loose from Winnipeg defenseman Mark Stuart in front of the net before he followed up the rebound of Rick Nash's point shot and stuffed it past Pavelec.

The Jets went ahead 2-1 when Stempniak took Mathieu Perreault's drop pass and snapped a shot under the crossbar for his 12th goal. Stempniak has three goals and three assists in 13 games with Winnipeg.

After Perreault was called for interference against Rangers center Dominic Moore, Brassard stepped into a left-side shot and sent it through Nash's screen for his 17th goal. Entering the game, the New York power play had gone 2-for-33 in its past 15 games.

Winnipeg does not play until Saturday, when a visit from the Vancouver Canucks finishes a four-game homestand.

"I think it's a good thing," Pavelec said of the schedule break. "After those two losses, mentally it's tough. Five games left, we have to prove everything we've got, and we'll see what happens."

Time is running out for the Jets. After the homestand ends, they play three games in four days on the road, including a back-to-back set against the Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues.

"It's just one of those games that we're right on the edge all game," said Jets center Bryan Little, who returned after missing 11 games because of an upper-body injury. "You can't say we didn't have chances, or it might have been a different game.

"They did control the play sometimes, and I thought we did a good job of kind of riding the storm out. It honestly felt like they didn't get much, but the stuff we did give them, they took advantage of and scored on."

When the Jets threatened, Lundqvist stopped them. He is 26-12-3 with a 2.29 goals-against average and .921 save percentage. Having him ready for the playoffs is one of the Rangers' major goals for their final five games of the regular season.

Lundqvist did not like his play on Slater's goal, but his response encouraged him.

"I didn't change anything after that, and that's a good sign for me," Lundqvist said. "It's important that [I did not] change the game and stayed focused with the things I had to do, so that feels good."

After the loss at Boston, Lundqvist worked with goaltending coach Benoit Allaire on his movement and timing.

"I felt so much better tonight than the last game," Lundqvist said. "Just my focus and being more comfortable, it's night and day.

"I think that every game is going to help me to get closer to where I want to be mentally and technically. I feel a huge improvement from the [game at Boston], just the way I felt and my focus on the right details. It's definitely a step in the right direction for me."

The Rangers finish their two-game road trip when they visit the Wild on Thursday. A schedule down the stretch that includes games against teams battling to make the playoffs should help New York round its game into shape, Lundqvist said.

"It was a fun, intense game," he said. "It was a good test for me and the team to bounce back here. We needed this to feel good about our game."

{allcanada} Norway routs Canada at curling worlds

wine.com wine.com

The Fault in Our Stars / Divergent / The Descendants

HALIFAX - Norway's Thomas Ulsrud upped the fashion ante Tuesday night.

He also showed Canada's Pat Simmons why he's the reigning world champion.

Looking loose and comfortable in colourful checkered knickers, soccer socks and patterned flat caps, the Norwegians defeated Canada 9-3 to hand the host side its first loss at the Ford world men's curling championship.

"We got in trouble early and often," Simmons said. "They're too good to do that against."

The victory also moved Norway into a first-place tie with Canada at 6-1.

Ulsrud opened with a deuce and piled on with four points in the third end after a Simmons takeout attempt was a little wide. That silenced the partisan crowd at Scotiabank Centre.

"They made us pay, that's for sure," Simmons said.

Simmons got one back in the fourth with a draw for one but Ulsrud hit a delicate raise for a single in the sixth. Canada scored a single in the seventh and Norway scored two in the eighth to end it.

"We showed up to play tonight," Ulsrud said.

The two rinks are medal favourites and this very well may have been a gold-medal game preview. If so, Simmons, third John Morris, second Carter Rycroft and lead Nolan Thiessen have some work to do.

Ulsrud and his crew were aggressive and used pinpoint accuracy to prevent the Canadians from mounting any offence. Norway set the early tone and Canada couldn't find its rhythm.

"We weren't expecting to go through this undefeated, that's for sure," Simmons said. "There are too many good teams. We'll just rebound and tomorrow's a new day. I look forward to it."

Meanwhile, Sweden's Niklas Edin appears to be finding his form again after a mediocre start. The 2013 world champion whipped Switzerland's Marc Pfister 8-2 in the minimum six ends.

Switzerland remained in third place at 5-2 while Sweden pulled into a fourth-place tie with Japan's Yusuke Morozumi at 4-3. The top four teams at the end of round-robin play will make the Page playoffs.

"My guess is it's not the (only) time Norway and Canada will play this week," Ulsrud said. "We're going to play them again."

Simmons beat Morozumi 7-4 in the afternoon draw. The Canadian skip made a draw for three in the fourth end and stole a single in the eighth for a three-point lead that held up the rest of the way.

"We had to play well," Simmons said. "They are a very good team. They gave Canada a whupping last year. It was a well-curled game and it had to be."

Canada shot 85 per cent as a team while Japan came in at 71 per cent. Japanese second Tetsuro Shimizu struggled at just 57 per cent, easily the lowest individual percentage of the 32 curlers on the ice in the afternoon.

Ulsrud held off Finland's Aku Kauste 8-7 earlier in the day. Pfister beat Kauste by the same score in the morning draw for his fifth victory.

Attendance was 1,889 for the afternoon draw and 1,117 in the morning. Things picked up a bit in the evening with 3,019 fans on hand in the 10,500-seat venue.

The playoffs begin Friday and the medal games are scheduled for Sunday. Canada finished fourth last year in Beijing and hasn't won gold since Glenn Howard took the 2012 title in Basel, Switzerland.

The Czech Republic, Finland and the United States were tied at 3-4. China, Italy, Russia and Scotland were next at 2-5.

TORONTO -- The Tampa Bay Lightning missed an opportunity take over first place in the Atlantic Division, losing to the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 at Air Canada Centre on Tuesday.

The Lightning (47-24-7) remained one point behind the Montreal Canadiens in the Atlantic. The Canadiens did not play Tuesday.

The Lightning, who clinched a Stanley Cup Playoff berth Monday with a 5-3 win against the Canadiens, played without four regular defensemen. Victor Hedman (upper body) left the game Monday after one shift of the third period, and joined Andrej Sustr (upper body), Jason Garrison (upper body) and Braydon Coburn (lower body) as injured.

Defenseman Slater Koekkoek, Tampa Bay's first pick (No. 10) in the 2012 NHL Draft, made his NHL debut after being called up from the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League.

Lightning center Tyler Johnson, their second-leading scorer, missed his second game with an upper-body injury.

Toronto (29-42-6) took a 1-0 lead with Tampa Bay's Brendan Morrow in the penalty box for tripping. Nazem Kadri tipped Joakim Lindstrom's one-timer past Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy at 8:53 of the first period.

David Booth made it 2-0 at 12:03 when his sharp-angle shot from the right side beat Vasilevskiy to the far side. It was Booth's seventh goal of the season, first in eight games.

The Lightning made it 2-1 at 18:04 when Ryan Callahan tapped home a rebound in front after Toronto goalie James Reimer made a splits save on Ondrej Palat with Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly off for holding.

Rielly scored 24 seconds into the third period, his eighth goal of the season, to make it 3-1. The left-shooting defenseman broke to the Tampa Bay net on the right side, took a pass from Kadri and put a high wrist shot past Vasilevskiy on the short side.
