OKLAHOMA CITY -- One day after his playoff run was cut shorter than anticipated, league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander called his season a failure due to the lack of a second consecutive championship.

“I failed at my goal,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “I didn’t achieve what I wanted to achieve. But I learn the most about myself and make the greatest amount of increases in my career when I fail and don’t get what I want. I look at this no different. I didn’t get where I wanted to go this season. There’s a reason for that. Now I have to look at that reason and try to make sure it never happens again.”

Gilgeous-Alexander’s normally excellent efficiency dipped in the seven-game series loss to the San Antonio Spurs, as he averaged 25.9 points on 40.9% shooting and 28.6% on 3s, compared with 31.1 points on 55.3% shooting and 38.6% on 3s during the regular season.

He did score 35 points on 21 shots in a magnificent Game 7 performance, nearly willing the injured Thunder past the finish line. But that output came almost entirely against a swarming, overloaded Spurs defense designed to make life difficult on the two-time MVP.

San Antonio had surging two-way wing Stephon Castle hound Gilgeous-Alexander at the point of attack, shaded its help defense his direction and had perhaps the greatest rim protector in league history, Victor Wembanyama, looming behind the play and guarding the paint.

That led to an array of heavily contested midrange jumpers from Gilgeous-Alexander and a lower volume of shots at the rim.

“There’s a guy on their back line that is a little bit different,” Gilgeous-Alexander said of Wembanyama. “They funnel everything to him. ... It’s a really good defense. But it’s not impossible to score. I just think it’s very different.”

Gilgeous-Alexander also didn’t have his usual help. Jalen Williams, the team’s No. 2 scorer, was limited to 54 minutes in the series after aggravating a tricky left hamstring injury early in Game 2. He returned for a brief Game 6 cameo before he was again ruled out for Game 7.

“Obviously I think I could have made an impact,” Williams said. “I think we could have won if I played. Went to seven with them without me playing. I don’t think I make us worse. That’s really my answer to that. But it’s also hats off to them. What do you want them to do about me being hurt?”

The Thunder were also without replacement starter Ajay Mitchell for a majority of the series. Mitchell had a big second-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 22.5 points in the sweep, but strained his right calf in Game 3, ending his season.

Without Williams and Mitchell, some of the scoring burden was expected to fall on starting center Chet Holmgren. But Holmgren struggled in his matchup with Wembanyama and the Spurs, averaging 10.7 points on only 7.3 shot attempts in the seven games.

That included a nearly silent Game 7. Holmgren went 1-of-2 shooting in 33 minutes, scoring four points on the night of the Thunder’s elimination. He was able to get only three total 3s up the last four games of the series -- and he missed them all.

“I feel like part of it was being kind of closed out heavy,” Holmgren said. “Then also kind of just being a little bit out of rhythm sometimes. I feel like there were definitely opportunities to get more attempts up that I didn’t in the moment. That’s an area to improve.”

Gilgeous-Alexander defended Holmgren in the aftermath, saying the Thunder became the top seed in the West the moment Holmgren entered the lineup and reiterated that they “need Chet Holmgren” moving forward.

“I didn’t perform my greatest this series either,” Gilgeous-Alexander said when asked whether he’d talk to Holmgren about areas of improvement. “Chet won’t come to me with a development plan for the summer, you know what I mean? Chet knows how much I care about this game and want to be the best version of myself. I know how much Chet loves this game and wants to see the best version of himself.”

With the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup less than two weeks away, Canada’s men national team will look to sharpen their form with two friendlies this week, beginning with a clash against Uzbekistan on Monday.

You can watch all the action LIVE from Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, beginning with pre-game coverage at 8pm ET/5pm PT on the TSN Network, TSN.ca and the TSN App.

Jesse Marsch’s side haven’t been able to stay healthy over the past few months leading up to the World Cup with numerous key players missing time due to significant injures.

Canada was dealt with another major blow on Saturday night when the dynamic Marcelo Flores was lost for the tournament after rupturing his ACL during the Concacaf Champions Cup final while playing for his club team, Tigres UANL of Mexico’s Liga MX.

Marsch has until June 11, a day before Canada’s first game against Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field, to find a replacement.

The coach noted Jayden Nelson, Daniel Jebbison, and Junior Hoilett are all candidates to fill the void during a media availability on Sunday.

As for Monday’s game, defender Richie Laryea will be in the lineup against Uzbekistan after missing recent games with his club team Toronto FC due to a thigh injury.

One of Canada’s most important players, defender Moïse Bombito, will also see minutes as he works his way back to full form after suffering a devastating fractured tibia in October playing for Ligue 1 club Nice.

Marsch did rule out midfielders Ali Ahmed and Jacob Shaffelburg due to their injures.

Most players will play 45 minutes with changes expected to happen at halftime.

Star Alphonso Davies was set to arrive in Edmonton on Sunday night, but won’t be in the lineup against Uzbekistan due to a hamstring injury suffered with Bayern Munich.

Davies’ status for the opening game against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 is still up in the air.

Rain is expected to continue through Monday in Edmonton.

Battle in Net: Crépeau vs. St. Clair

One of the biggest decisions still to make is who will play goal for Canada’s opening game.

Maxime Crépeau, the 32-year-old veteran for Orlando City, will start the first half against Uzbekistan with Inter Miami goalie Dayne St. Clair, 29, starting the second half.

Canada will play Ireland in an friendly on Friday.

{allcanada} CanMNT’s Flores confirms ACL injury, won’t play in FIFA World Cup

Canada’s Marcelo Flores will miss this summer’s World Cup after suffering a knee injury.

The 22-year-old winger from Georgetown, Ont., ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while playing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup with his Mexican club Tigres UNAL on Saturday, said Canadian team head coach Jesse Marsch.

Flores went down in the 77th minute and left the field in tears as Tigres fell to Toluca in a shootout.

Marsch said he spoke with the young athlete both Saturday night and Sunday morning.

“Obviously, we’re devastated for him,” the coach said in a press conference Sunday.

“Our hearts are with him. He’s in good spirits. He’s already focused on moving forward and getting himself healthy for the future.”

The team was watching the game while eating dinner Saturday night when they saw Flores crumple to the turf.

“Obviously there’s a couple players that have been through that injury and we kind of knew that it could possibly be what it is … He was very important for us, as a person as well as a player,” said Canada’s vice captain Stephen Eustáquio.

Flores has made just two appearances for the national team — both in March’s international window — after switching his allegiance from Mexico in November.

He was not at Canada’s training camp in Charlotte, N.C., last week, but was one of the 10 midfielders named to the country’s 26-player World Cup roster on Friday.

His is the latest in a long list injuries to Canadian players ahead of this summer’s global soccer showcase.

Most of the wounded are expected to return to the national squad before or during the competition, including captain Alphonso Davies.

The 25-year-old Bayern Munich star missed last week’s camp as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. He’s expected to join his teammates Sunday night in his hometown of Edmonton, where Canada will face Uzbekistan in a friendly pre-tournament tune up Monday.

Marsch has said Davies will play at the World Cup, but it’s “unlikely” he’ll be ready for Canada’s first game June 12, a matchup with Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto.

World Cup rules allow Marsch a country to replace any injured player on the 26-man roster up to 24 hours before the first game kicks off. An injured goalkeeper can be replaced at any time throughout the tournament.

Canada’s coach said Sunday he has not made a decision on who will take the vacant spot.

“We have time. So we’re going to take a little time to just evaluate a few different things,” Marsch said.

Three players who did not make Friday’s final cuts remain with the team, including Sporting Kansas City defender Zorhan Bassong, midfielder Jayden Nelson of Austin FC and Ralph Priso, a Vancouver Whitecaps defender who previously played midfielder.

Marsch noted he could also call back a player who was cut from the 26-player roster or someone who did not come to camp in Charlotte, such as national team veteran Junior Hoilet.

“We’re going to get through this match (Monday) and kind of evaluate where things are at and then make a decision probably between the next two matches,” he said.

For now, the Canadians are preparing for the tournament and supporting a teammate who won’t play alongside them.

Everyone texted Flores on Sunday when they learned about the extent of the injury, Eustáquio said.

“We have extra an motivation to go through this World Cup to make him proud as all Canadians,” he said. ”And hopefully at some stage he can meet us and give us his strength.”

Marsch said he has invited Flores to come be around the team at the World Cup after he undergoes knee surgery.

“Our hearts are with him. He’s in good spirits. He’s already focused on moving forward and getting himself healthy for the future,” the coach said.

“He loves the team, he said he’d love to do that and he said one of his favourite things to do is be with this team. We’re thinking about him and we’re devastated for him.”

Macklin Celebrini continues to impress on the international stage.

The 19-year-old from North Vancouver was named an all-star at the 2026 world championships despite Canada losing the bronze medal Sunday to Norway in a stunning overtime upset.

Celebrini finished the tournament second in scoring, potting six goals and 14 points in 10 games. He led the Canadians in scoring and was four points ahead of Sidney Crosby, who had 10 points in 10 games.

Also named to the all-star team are forwards Aleksander Barkov, Sven Andrighetto — who led the tournament in scoring with 15 points — defencemen Henri Jokiharju and Roman Josi, as well as goaltender Leonardo Genoni.

Josi was named tournament MVP just after his Switzerland side fell to Finland in the gold-medal game.

The Nashville Predators captain led all blue-liners in scoring, with five goals and 12 points.

{allcanada} Blue Jays’ Sanchez suffers wrist contusion after being hit with ball thrown from stands

Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Jesus Sanchez left Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles in the top of the sixth inning after being hit with a ball that came from the right field stands.

Sanchez departed the field holding his right arm with the training staff and manager John Schneider and was replaced by Yohendrick Pinango in right.

The team later announced Sanchez was removed from the game with a right wrist contusion. He underwent precautionary x-rays, which came back negative for a fracture.

Video later showed that during a mound meeting on a 2-0 count, Sanchez was facing the right field bleachers and appeared to be in a conversation with someone in the crowd. A ball then came in and hit an unsuspecting Sanchez on the arm, causing him to recoil in pain and eventually leave the game.

According to Jacob Calvin Meyer of the Baltimore Sun, several fans in right field described the situation as an accident. Meyer reports fans said a young fan saw Sanchez flapping his glove as if to indicate he wanted to play catch during the stoppage in play. The fan then threw the ball late after Sanchez had turned away and hit him in the arm.

According to Meyer, an Orioles spokesperson said the fan was ejected from the ballpark.

“We have identified the fan and removed them from the ballpark while we conduct a thorough investigation,” the Orioles said via Meyer.

The 28-year-old Sanchez has been one of Toronto’s most productive hitters of late, slashing .400/.419/.625 with 10 RBI over his last 15 games.

The Blue Jays trailed 6-0 at the time of the incident and went on to lose 9-5 to fall back to two games below the .500 mark. They will be off on Monday before beginning a series in Atlanta against the Braves on Tuesday evening.

ZURICH (AP) — Norway stunned Canada 3-2 in overtime of the bronze medal game to capture its first ice hockey world championship medal on Sunday.

Noah Steen scored the winner 3:32 into overtime. The previous best result for Norway was a fourth-place finish in 1951.

In a wild ending, Canada was 2-0 down when it pulled netminder Jet Greaves. Robert Thomas then scored from the slot to reduce the deficit with 1:16 remaining in the final period with an unassisted goal.

With eight seconds to go, captain Macklin Celebrini and Ryan O'Reilly set up Thomas for his second to tie it at 2-2, forcing overtime.

Earlier, Emilio Pettersen gave Norway a 1-0 lead in the opening period and Stian Solberg added another with a deflected shot in the second. Goaltender Henrik Haukeland stopped 44 shots.

Greaves made 21 saves for Canada.

Canada had to settle for the bronze medal game after a 4-2 upset defeat to Finland in the semifinals on Saturday.

The Canadians have come up short at the worlds since they won their last and record 28th title in 2023.

They finished fourth in 2024 and were stunned 2-1 by Denmark in the quarterfinals last year.

The worlds ended in disappointment for Canada again this year despite a lineup that included teenage sensation Celebrini as captain and NHL great Sidney Crosby in addition to several established NHL stars, including O’Reilly, John Tavares and Mark Scheifele.

Canada managed to win all of its group games, including a 6-5 victory over Norway in overtime, and eliminated defending champion U.S. in the quarterfinals.

But Finland, led by Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov, proved too good in the semis.

Switzerland and Finland meet in the final later Sunday.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Pete Alonso singled in the winning run with the bases loaded in a five-run ninth inning to give the Baltimore Orioles a 6-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.

The Orioles had four hits in the ninth inning after managing only three and hitting into a season-high four double plays in the first eight.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had his first four-hit game since Sept. 5 for the Blue Jays, whose winning streak was halted at four. Toronto (29-30) was attempting to move over .500 for the first time since it was 4-3 on April 3.

After Orioles designated hitter Samuel Basallo walked back to the dugout grimacing and holding his left shoulder upon striking out against Jeff Hoffman to open the ninth inning, Coby Mayo was hit by a pitch. He scored on Leody Taveras’ triple, and Jackson Holliday followed with a single to right to pull the Orioles to 5-3.

Hoffman (4-4) then gave up a double to Colton Cowser before Taylor Ward worked a four-pitch walk. Gunnar Henderson followed with a walk to force in a run to end Hoffman’s outing.

Adley Rutschman then walked against Connor Seabold to tie it, and Alonso singled up the middle against a drawn-in infield to win it.

Albert Suárez (2-0) allowed an unearned run in the ninth for Baltimore.

Toronto starter Trey Yesavage worked around seven walks to get through five innings of one-run ball. It was the most walks issued by a Blue Jay since current Oriole Chris Bassitt had seven on Sept. 23, 2024, against Boston. Yesavage allowed two hits and struck out four.

Brandon Young struck out a career-high seven in 6 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits.

UP NEXT

Toronto was set to start an opener before using RHP Spencer Miles (2-0, 2.16 ERA) on Sunday in the series finale. RHP Kyle Bradish (2-6, 3.86) was scheduled to start for Baltimore.

CHICAGO (AP) — Dennis Hull, the two-way NHL forward who starred alongside superstar older brother Bobby Hull with the Chicago Blackhawks and helped Canada win the 1972 Summit Series, died Friday night, according to brother Garry. He was 81.

Nephew Bart Hull confirmed Hull's death on social media Saturday, and the Blackhawks followed that with a statement from owner Rocky Wirtz. No other details were available.

Hull played 13 of 14 seasons in the league with Chicago before one final year with the Detroit Red Wings. He appeared in five All-Star Games and was voted a second-team NHL All-Star in 1972-73.

"Dennis enjoyed a distinguished career built on his scoring ability and consistency, leaving lasting contributions not only to the Blackhawks franchise but to the game itself," Wirtz said. “Known around the league for his immense skill, toughness and intelligence, Dennis was as dominant on the ice as he was beloved off it. He often drew on his sharp wit and sense of humor to keep the locker room loose, while his warmth and humility made everyone he met feel welcome.”

While brother Bobby was excluded from playing for Canada against the Soviet Union in '72 because he was in the World Hockey Association, Dennis went and had two goals and two assists in four games, playing on a line with New York Rangers stars Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert.

Hull had 303 goals and 351 assists for 654 points in 959 regular-season NHL games. He had another 67 points in 104 games in the playoffs, during an era Chicago came close but never won the Stanley Cup.

Bobby Hull, the Hall of Famer known as the “Golden Jet,” died at 84 in January 2023.

Claude Lemieux’s brain is being donated to the Boston University CTE Center to research the long-term effects of repetitive brain injuries, his family said Saturday in a statement released by daughter Claudia Lemieux Bishop.

Lemieux died of suicide at age 60 on Thursday, according to authorities, after earlier in the week serving as the Montreal Canadiens’ torchbearer prior to a playoff game. He played nearly 1,500 NHL games with six teams from 1983-2009 and was known for his hard-hitting style and ability to perform in big games on the way to winning the Stanley Cup four times.

The family said it gave the CTE Center permission to publicly share any findings with Lemieux’s name, adding that no conclusions should be drawn regarding any diagnosis.

“Claude dedicated his post-playing career to helping the next generation,” the family said, referring to Lemieux becoming an agent. “By allowing his name to be connected to this research, we hope his life can contribute to greater understanding, more honest conversations and better protection for athletes and families in the years ahead.”

{allcanada} Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime advances to round of 16 at French Open

--
bannersPuppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Meet Filmora 11, a creative video editing experience all on one platform to make and share stories.

Felix Auger-Aliassime is the last Canadian standing in singles play at the French Open.

The No. 4 seed downed No. 31 seed Brandon Nakashima of the U.S. 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1) on Saturday to advance to the round of 16.

With Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic both eliminated and Carlos Alcaraz injured, this might represent one of Auger-Aliassime's best chances to capture a Grand Slam title.

The Montrealer matched a career best at the French Open by reaching the fourth round for the third time. He saved a set point in the third set against Nikishima before taking it to a tiebreaker.

He'll next face Chile's Alejandro Tabilo, who was born and raised in Toronto.

Auger-Aliassime had success at Roland-Garros at the 2024 Olympics, finishing fourth in singles and taking a bronze medal in mixed doubles with Gabriela Dabrowski.

Meanwhile, Canada's Victoria Mboko bowed out in the third round of women's singles with a three-set loss to Madison Keys of the United States.

Keys prevailed 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 over the ninth-seeded Mboko in the clay court Grand Slam tournament.

Mboko from Burlington, Ont., also reached the third round in her French Open debut last year.

The 19-year-old trailed Keys 4-2 in the third set, but worked her way back into contention to get to 5-5.

Mboko had serve to force a tiebreaker, but she was broken by the 19th-seeded Keys in the match that took two and a half hours to complete.

Keys will face 25th-seed Diana Shnaider of Russia in the fourth round.

{allcanada} Canadiens lose East Final, home struggles, power play among factors

The Montreal Canadiens were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 6-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final at Lenovo Center in Raleigh on Friday.

The Canadiens won Game 1 but lost the next four games as their offense struggled to get on track against the suffocating Hurricanes.

Montreal was effective early, winning 6-2 against a Carolina team that was rusty after sitting for 11 days after a second-round sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers. The Canadiens lost each of the next two games in overtime and were shut out in Game 4, managing three shots in the third period.

Montreal advanced to the conference final with seven-game upsets in each of the first two rounds. The Canadiens defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round and won in overtime against the Buffalo Sabres on a goal by Alex Newhook, in the second round.

The Canadiens (48-24-10) finished third in the Atlantic Division in the regular season.

The skinny

Potential unrestricted free agents: Patrik Laine, F

Potential restricted free agents: Zachary Bolduc, F; Kirby Dach, F; Joe Veleno, F

Potential 2026 Draft picks: 8

Here are five reasons why the Canadiens were eliminated:

1. Home-ice disadvantage

The Bell Centre is one of the greatest atmospheres in a playoff landscape full of intimidating buildings. But that wasn't the case for the Canadiens this postseason. They lost their final four home games and six of eight during this playoff run. Their final win on home ice was Game 3 against the Sabres in the second round.

In the four-game losing streak at home to close out the postseason, they were outscored 18-7. They were shut out two times this postseason; each happened on home ice.

2. Power outage

In the final five games against the Sabres in the second round, the Canadiens had seven power-play goals and scored at least one in each game. In the first four games against the Hurricanes, the power play accounted for one goal, in part because Montreal could not draw penalties like it had earlier in the playoffs when its speed through the neutral zone caused issues for the Lightning and Sabres.

The Canadiens had two power-play goals in the five games against the Hurricanes, the second coming after falling behind 5-0 in Game 5. They entered the conference final with a 25 percent success rate on the power play (13-for-52) and then went cold (2-of-13, 15.3 percent) against a team that doesn't allow many even-strength goals.

3. Too much hockey

The Canadiens played 19 postseason games before being eliminated, seven of which went to overtime. The Hurricanes played 13 to get to the Stanley Cup Final, their only loss in Game 1 of the conference final. The long layoff hurt Carolina in that game but helped as the series advanced.

Carolina's top players were fresh and Montreal's big guns were starting to wear down after playing 19 games in 41 days and never having more than two days off. There are six Canadiens players among the top eight in total time on ice leaders for the postseason, topped by defenseman Lane Hutson, who played 483:36.

Plus, goalie Jakub Dobes played each of those 19 games, a workload the rookie goalie had never experienced.

4. Space at a premium

The Hurricanes took time and space away from the Canadiens all over the ice, but it was most telling when Montreal was on the attack.

In the 6-2 win in Game 1, the Canadiens scored four times in the first and had nine shots for the rest of the game as the Hurricanes started to find their footing. In Game 2, Montreal had 12 shots on goal. The next game, they had 13 shots; five in the first 40 minutes, and one each in the third period and in overtime. In Game 4, they had 18 shots, and just five in the first period. In the clinching game, Montreal had four shots in the first period; Carolina had three goals.

For the series, Montreal was outshot 167-89. After averaging 25.1 shots per game for its first 14 playoff games, the Canadiens managed 17.8 against the Hurricanes. That's a recipe for failure.

5. Chasing games

The Canadiens led for the final 55:56 of Game 1, but they never led again in the series.

While some of the series was played evenly as evidence by overtime being needed in Games 2 and 3, Montreal was chasing the game for long stretches as well.

Carolina scored first in each of the five games, putting the Canadiens on the back foot and forcing them to change their game plan to get back into the game. Montreal trailed for 95 minutes and 35 seconds from Carolina's first goal in Game 2 until the final whistle in Game 5.

That is an exhausting way to play hockey, especially against the top seed from the East.

The Edmonton Elks issued several injury updates Friday as per TSN Football Insider Farhan Lalji, including a pair of blows to their defensive line.

Lalji reports both Darien Newell and Brandon Barlow will each miss the 2026 season with Achilles tears. Barlow played 18 games for the Elks last season and had 35 defensive tackles, while Newell has yet to play in a CFL game.

Offensive lineman Brett Boyko (hand) and defensive back Benjamin Sangmuah (knee) will each start the season on the six-game injured list. However, as Lalji notes, neither player requires surgery and are expected to return during the season.

Boyko is a four-year CFL veteran and has spent the past two seasons with the Elks, while Sangmuah was selected in the second round of the 2026 CFL Draft out of the University of British Columbia.

Lalji also reports receivers Joseph Robustelli and Kaion Julien-Grant are each expected to play in Week 1 against the Ottawa Redblacks.

Robustelli had 38 catches for 544 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games for the Elks last season. Julien-Grant had 57 grabs and 820 yards with seven TDs in 18 games for Edmonton.

The Elks open their regular-season schedule against the Ottawa Redblacks on TSN on Saturday, June 6.
