REGINA — Anthony Lanier II will be returning for a fourth season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

According to a league source, the six-foot-six, 285-pound defensive lineman signed a one-year contract extension with the CFL club Monday. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity as the Riders haven't announced the move.

But Saskatchewan did announce Monday that Canadian defensive back Nelson Lokombo, the second player taken in the 2021 CFL draft, had signed a one-year extension with the club.

Both Lanier II and Lokombo were slated to become CFL free agents next month.,

Lanier II, a 30-year-old Georgia native, has appeared in 35 career regular-season games with Saskatchewan. He has registered 51 tackles, 14 sacks and two forced fumbles.

Lokombo, who played his college football at the University of Saskatchewan, has played in 23 regular-season games (starting five) with the Riders. He has recorded 18 tackles, four special-teams tackles and a forced fumble.

At the University of Saskatchewan, Lokombo earned the Presidents' Trophy as Canadian university football's top defensive player.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers agree to extension with Canadian centre Kolankowski

WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension with Canadian centre Chris Kolankowski on Monday.

Kolankowski was slated to become a free agent Feb. 13.

The six-foot-one, 309-pound Toronto native started all 18 regular-season games last season with Winnipeg. He's entering his seventh CFL season and fourth with the Blue Bombers.

Kolankowski was originally drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 2016.

McManis, a six-foot-one, 225-pound Memphis native, joined Toronto as a free agent in February 2022 and had a team-high 95 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, and one forced fumble in 14 games. He was named a CFL all-star for the first time and helped the Argos win the Grey Cup.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) Brad Marchand scored at 1:48 of overtime and the Boston Bruins beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Thursday night.

David Pastrnak and Trent Frederic also scored for the Atlantic Division- and Eastern Conference-leading Bruins. Jeremy Swayman stopped 35 shots.

Thomas Chabot and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the Senators. Joonas Korpisalo made 20 saves.

Ottawa was trailing 2-1 when Josh Norris thought he had tied the game at 13:18 of the third. But, officials determined a hand pass was involved.

The Senators did come back to tie the game at 2-all with a power-play goal at 16:42, when Tarasenko sent a shot past Swayman.

Leading 1-0 after one period, Boston extended its advantage at 8:19 of the second when Frederic beat Korpisalo high to the blocker side. The Senators cut the lead to one with a late power-play goal.

Drake Batherson made a backhand pass to Chabot, who snapped a shot past Swayman for his second of the season.

The goal resulted in a scrum behind the net, and Chabot got punched by Charlie McAvoy, triggering a larger scrum and roughing penalties assessed to McAvoy, Wotherspoon, Tim Stuzle, with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to Batherson.

The Bruins were largely outplayed in the first, but still held a one-goal lead after the opening 20 minutes.

Ottawa failed to capitalize on its two power-play chances, while Boston scored three seconds into its power play at 18:36 of the first. Pastrnak beat Korpisalo from just inside the blue line on the Bruins' third shot of the period.

Senators forward Shane Pinto made his home debut after serving a 41-game suspension for gambling. Pinto had returned to action and picked up a point in a win at Philadelphia on Sunday.

{allcanada} Priestman signs contract to remain Canadian women's coach through 2027 World Cup

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

While the search for a general secretary and men's coach continues, Canada Soccer has locked up women's coach Bev Priestman through the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The 37-year-old Priestman, who took over the Canadian women on Nov. 1, 2020, was initially appointed "through the next quadrennial" and had been working on a rolling contract. Now she has a new, defined deal.

Priestman has a 28-9-10 record in 47 matches at Canada's helm and was a nominee for FIFA Women's Best Coach in 2021 and 2022. She succeeded Kenneth Heiner-Moller, who returned to his native Denmark.

The Canadian women, currently ranked 10th in the world, won Olympic gold in Tokyo under Priestman in August 2021.

Canada has won five of six since a disappointing showing at last summer's FIFA World Cup in Australia that saw it exit after the group stage. Priestman's team, which went 7-5-1 in 2023, has recorded three consecutive clean sheets and conceded just two goals since the World Cup.

"I'm delighted to commit to this team, a collection of world-class players, through to the FIFA 2027 Women's World Cup," Priestman said in a Canada Soccer statement Thursday. "We closed out 2023 in an exciting fashion and I can't wait to continue the journey with this incredible group.

"It is clear to me that the future is bright with the talent we have coming through our system, and I'm honoured to be leading our efforts in chasing even more success for this program and our country."

Next up is the CONCACAF W Gold Cup in February followed by the SheBelieves Cup in April, with both tournaments in the United States, as the Canadians prepare to defend their Olympic title this summer in Paris.

Priestman had signalled last month that she wanted to stay in the job, when asked about a report that she had contacted CF Montreal about its then-vacant coaching job.

"That's not true," she said emphatically after longtime captain Christine Sinclair's final match for Canada, a 1-0 friendly win over Australia in Vancouver on Dec. 5. "I absolutely love this team. And I'm actually trying to commit to the future, for the 2027 World Cup. Moments like tonight only remind you how special the people are in this team, not just as footballers. And I absolutely love them."

Canada Soccer has other vacancies to fill with Alyson Walker, citing "personal reasons," walking away recently before taking up the post of general secretary. The governing body had been waiting on the appointment of a general secretary before naming a permanent head coach to success John Herdman, who took over Toronto FC in October.

Former assistant coach Mauro Biello is currently interim men's coach — and a candidate for the permanent job.

Priestman spent five years with Canada Soccer in a variety of coaching roles before returning in June 2018 to her native England, where she served as coach of the England's women's under-18 side and assistant coach with the senior English women.

In her first go-round with Canada Soccer, Priestman served as director of its developmental EXCEL program and had stints as coach of the under-15, under-17 and under-20 women's sides. She was also an assistant coach to Herdman while he was in charge of the women's team.

Before that she spent 4 1/2 years with New Zealand Football, serving as head of football development before leaving in June 2013.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed Canadian offensive lineman Philip Blake to a one-year deal, the team announced Thursday.

Blake, a 38-year-old native Torontonian, suited up for six games for the Roughriders in 2023 after recovering from an injury sustained in the preseason, helping the Green and White earn nearly 400 rushing yards following his return.

A Grey Cup champion during his time with the Toronto Argonauts (2022), Blake also spent time with the Montreal Alouettes (2015-18) after being drafted by them with the 23rd overall pick in 2011.

{allcanada} Caufield breaks tie late in 3rd period to lift Canadiens over Devils 3-2

banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Cole Caufield put in a rebound with 4:31 to play and the Montreal Canadiens beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 on Wednesday night after squandering a two-goal lead early in the third period.

Juraj Slafkovsky and Joshua Roy also scored as the Canadiens won their second straight and improved to 4-2-2 in their last eight games. Sam Montembeault made 28 saves.

Luke Hughes and Alexander Holtz scored power-play goals for New Jersey in the opening 1:37 of the third to tie it. Nico Daws stopped 22 shots in his third consecutive start.

Daws made the initial stop on a drive by Jordan Harris. Sean Monahan, who had two assists, nudged the puck closer to the net and Caufield swatted it over the goal line.

Trailing 2-0 late in the second period, the Devils caught a break when Nick Suzuki was called for a double minor for high-sticking defenseman Kevin Bahl.

New Jersey didn't score in the final 45 seconds of the period, but Hughes and Holtz connected on the power play to tie the game.

Hughes' shot from the point appeared to deflect off the leg of Montreal forward Jake Evans past Montembeault. Holtz got his 11th of the season on a shot from the top of the left circle.

The Canadiens scored first when Daws made a mistake playing the puck and it led to Caufield setting up Slafkovsky in front. It was his sixth goal of the season and second in two games.

Roy, a fifth-round draft pick in 2021 who was playing his third NHL game, doubled the margin with a slam dunk in front after being set up by Monahan. It was his first NHL goal and Monahan was quick to grab the puck for the 20-year-old.

{allcanada} Whitecaps transfer forward Becher to Danish team AC Horsens

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps have transferred forward Simon Becher to Danish side AC Horsens, the Major League Soccer club announced Wednesday.

The Whitecaps will retain a percentage of future transfer fees as part of the move.

The 24-year-old Becher made six starts and 25 appearances across all competitions with Vancouver last season.

He scored two goals in his first start of the 2023 MLS season, a 5-0 rout of Montreal on April 1. With the brace he became the faster player in league history to score his first four MLS goals, needing just 87 minutes.

He finished the season with four goals and an assist across all appearances.

Becher was selected 16th overall by the Whitecaps in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft. He had eight goals with development side Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 that year, as well as a goal for the senior team during a brief call-up.

He joins an AC Horsens side that sits seventh in Denmark's 12-team first division, the second tier of soccer in that country behind the Superliga.

"Simon has improved tremendously since first joining our club in 2022, which is credit to him as well as a byproduct of the integration with our MLS NEXT Pro team," Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said in a release.

"With successful development comes increasing interest in our players. This transfer makes sense for all parties, as it allows us to continue to build our roster while giving Simon a platform to move forward in his career."
