SENATORS (23-21-6) at PENGUINS (24-17-7)
TV: ROOT, RDS2, TSN5
Season series: The Pittsburgh Penguins shut out the Ottawa Senators 2-0 in their first game this season, Oct. 15 at Consol Energy Center. Penguins forwards Evgeni Malkin and Daniel Sprong scored two goals 2:02 apart at the beginning of the second period and goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made 22 saves.
Senators team scope: Ottawa's injuries are beginning to pile up, and it seems defenseman Marc Methot is the lone Senator who could potentially return Tuesday. Methot has missed five games with an undisclosed injury but was listed as day-to-day leading into the All-Star break. Forward Milan Michalek fractured a finger on his right hand Jan. 22, one day after forward Kyle Turris' streak of 307 consecutive games played ended because of a lingering ankle injury. Forward Clarke MacArthur has been on injured reserve since Oct. 14 with a concussion, but began skating in early January. To continue to counterbalance the injuries to several forwards, the Senators recalled Dave Dziurzynski and Max McCormick from short stints in Binghamton following the break Monday. McCormick, a 23-year-old rookie, served as the Senators' fourth-line center between left wing Shane Prince and right wing Chris Neil before the break. In 18 NHL games, he's scored two goals and four points. Dziurzynski, who has not played since Dec. 29 against the Boston Bruins, has yet to score a goal in 12 games this season, his second in the NHL.
Penguins team scope: Forward Chris Kunitz could return to the lineup. Kunitz, who practiced Monday, missed the past two games entering the break with a lower-body injury, forcing fourth-line center Matt Cullen into his role as first-line left wing. Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said Kunitz would play two hours before their game against the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 23, but he was scratched late. Forward Beau Bennett's status is in question following the break, after he aggravated a previous upper-body injury against Vancouver. After missing over a month, Bennett returned against the Canucks but seemed to tweak his right shoulder late in the second period. He did not practice Monday. Before the break, Sullivan did not provide much information on Bennett's injury and said more would be known when the Penguins returned. Defenseman Kris Letang has strategically sat out a few practices after missing a game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 17 with an undisclosed injury. Letang, who did not practice Monday along with fellow all-star Malkin, said before the break he would play through his injury but miss some practices until he fully recovers.
