The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly signed unrestricted free agent center Jay McClement to a two-year contract.
According to Bob McKenzie of TSN.com, McClement, who spent the last two seasons with the Colorado Avalanche, will earn $3 million over the next two seasons.
McClement, drafted in the second round (No. 57) by the St. Louis Blues in 2001, has spent seven seasons in the League. He spent five-plus years with the Blues before being traded to the Avalanche in February 2011.
McClement is the prototypical shutdown center, who also excels in the faceoff circle on the penalty kill. The 29-year-old native of Kingstown, Ont., had 10 goals and 17 points, but also went 51.3 percent in the faceoff circle while averaging 13-plus minutes a game. He had 72 hits and blocked 54 shots and led the Avs in shorthanded minutes per game in 80 regular-season contests.
