LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Will Claxton and Daniel Summerhays shot identical 8-under 64s on Wednesday to top the leaderboard after the first round of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.
The top 25 players in the six-round event will earn 2012 PGA Tour cards.
Claxton opened on the Nicklaus Tournament Course, and Summerhays played the TPC Stadium Course.
Vaughn Taylor, William McGirt, Billy Hurley III and Bae Sang-moon were a stroke back. Taylor and McGirt played the Nicklaus Course, and Hurley and Bae opened on the Stadium Course.
The Calgary duo of James Love and Ryan Yip sit in a group tied for 26th after both shot 68s on the Nicklaus Course.
Stuart Anderson of Strathmore, Alta., shot 70 on the Nicklaus Course, while Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C., fired the same score on the Stadium Course. They are bunched in with a group tied for 61st.
Richard Scott of Kingsville, Ont., shot a 71 on the Stadium Course and sits tied for 87th.
