Want to woo Ryan Reynolds? Throw him a little Bette Davis.
"I literally only watch Turner Classic Movies," says the actor. "I think I'm innately boring."
That's debatable. But despite an ever-higher profile, and being anointed People's sexiest man alive, the actor has managed to live in something of a self-created bubble. He doesn't read the tabloids or blogs. And he manages to disappear between films.
"That's the thing I learned early on: No matter how preposterous it is, I don't say a word (about tabloid stories), ever. If you start doing it, you have to do it every time. I let it do its thing and watch it come and go. I'm pretty good at not looking at anything," says Reynolds, who never discussed either his marriage to or divorce from Scarlett Johansson with the media.
So how, exactly, does Reynolds manage to pull a vanishing act when he's not promoting something? He's not saying.
"Lately I've been working a lot. I've been in Africa shooting for five months," says Reynolds. "I also think it's important. I don't think you need to be in the spotlight that much. The spotlight can be a very stressful place to be. People can unravel. To vanish, to have everyday regular life experiences -- it informs your work, it informs everything. It allows you to sustain this a lot longer. This world can be very fleeting. And if you're not cultivating other aspects of your personality, you can be screwed very quickly."
So what's next for the irresistibly deadpan Reynolds? "I'm going to promote Van Wilder for the rest of the summer," he quips, referring to his 2002 comedy. "As of Friday I'm off. I'm off for 3.5 weeks. And I'm going to spend that time like spare change. I'm going to pull a little Houdini and disappear."
