My limited test was to write to NOT the best media, which I find makes
a difference, especially with DL DVD9. It was the only DL media I had
to hand.
I wrote to the same media from the same box, so they are probably from
the same manufacturing batch.
As Quadstone is getting good burns using the 2080880 Layer Break from
the DVDFab7 ini then I guess we can't assume a DVDFab7 problem, as I
previously 'diagnosed'.
I guess all we can conclude, so far, is that burning Double Layer DVD9
discs is problematical and maybe there is a 50/50 chance of a coaster
on cheap media! Possibly a better chance of a good burn on more
expensive, better quality media like Verbatim.
Other details:
I used Ricoh branded for Tesco to make the write.
I have 2 DVD writers installed, both LG.
one is E drive the other is F drive.
E is a considerably older drive.
F is relatively new but is a LightScribe capable drive.
I frequently experience PC hangs due to the Light Scribe, whether it
is the driver or the drive I don't know but the hangs only occur when
trying to burn a LS label. A reboot always cures the problem. Also if
I use the F drive for writing DVDs then it might cause it to hang when
wanting to burn a LS label. If I always use the older slower E drive
for writing DVDs then use the F just for LS label burning it works
fine.
I mention all this because I think there is a problem with this F
drive in relation to burning DL DVD9.
Playback on the E is much more tolerant of minor faults on a disc that
the F drive. E drive autoplays this successfull Emmylou burn, but F
drive doesn't.
My main conclusion is that it makes a difference as to which physical
drive one uses to write a DVD9 Double Layer disc.
Secondary conclusion is that Light Scribe writer is generally
guaranteed good for burning labels only. Not guaranteed good for
burning DVD9 Double Layer discs!
It would be interesting to hear other people's experiences of writing
DVD9 (DL) with Light Scribe DVD Burners.
