{allcanada} Stanley Cup Playoff primer: Eastern Conference

 

There are six days remaining in the NHL regular season, and the race for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Eastern Conference is extremely tight. The Tampa Bay Lightning have clinched the Atlantic Division, Eastern Conference and Presidents' Trophy, and the Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals and New York Islanders have also clinched berths. The Columbus Blue Jackets hold the first wild card in the conference and the Carolina Hurricanes lead the Montreal Canadiens by one point for the second wild card.

Here is where the Eastern Conference playoff picture stands today:

Tampa Bay Lightning (59-15-4)

Where they stand: 122 points; clinched Presidents' Trophy, Eastern Conference, Atlantic Division

If playoffs started today: Would play the Carolina Hurricanes in first round

Remaining games: at Ottawa Senators, Monday (7:30 p.m. ET; NHLN, TSN5, RDS, SUN, NHL.TV); at Montreal Canadiens, Tuesday; at Toronto Maple Leafs, Thurday; at Boston Bruins, Saturday

 

Boston Bruins (47-23-9)

Where they stand: 103 points; second in Atlantic Division; clinched playoff berth

If playoffs started today: Would play the Toronto Maple Leafs in first round

Remaining games: at Columbus Blue Jackets, Tuesay (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, TVAS, NESN, NHL.TV); at Minnesota Wild, Thursday; vs. Lightning, Saturday

 

Toronto Maple Leafs (45-26-7)

Where they stand: 97 points; third in Atlantic Division

If playoffs started today: Would play the Bruins in first round

Remaining games: at New York Islanders, Monday (7 p.m. ET; MSG+2, SNO, NHL.TV); vs. Hurricanes, Tuesday; vs Lightning, Thursday; at Montreal Canadiens, Saturday

 

Washington Capitals (47-24-8)

Where they stand: 102 points; first in Metropolitan Division, clinched playoff berth

If playoffs started today: Would play the Columbus Blue Jackets in first round

Remaining games: at Florida Panthers, Monday (7 p.m. ET; TVAS, FS-F, NBCSWA, NHL.TV); vs. Canadiens, Thursday; vs Islanders, Saturday

 

New York Islanders (46-26-7)

Where they stand: 99 points; second in Metropolitan Division, clinched playoff berth

If playoffs started today: Would play the Pittsburgh Penguins in first round

Remaining games: vs. Maple Leafs, Monday (7 p.m. ET; MSG+ 2, SNO, NHL.TV); at Panthers, Thursday; at Capitals, Saturday

 

Pittsburgh Penguins (43-25-11)

Where they stand: 97 points; third in Metropolitan Division

If playoffs started today: Would play the Islanders in first round

Remaining games: at Detroit Red Wings, Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET; FS-D ATTSN-PT, NHL.TV); vs Red Wings, Thursday; vs New York Rangers, Saturday

 

Columbus Blue Jackets (45-30-4)

Where they stand: 94 points; first wild card from Eastern Conference

If playoffs started today: Would play the Capitals in the first round

Remaining games: vs. Bruins, Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, TVAS, NESN, NHL.TV); at Rangers, Friday; at Senators, Saturday 

 
Carolina Hurricanes (43-29-7)

Where they stand: 93 points; second wild card from Eastern Conference

If playoffs started today: Would play the Lightning in first round

Remaining games: at Maple Leafs, Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET; TSN4, FS-CR, NHL.TV); vs. New Jersey Devils, Thursday; at Philadelphia Flyers, Saturday

 

Montreal Canadiens (42-29-8)

Where they stand: 92 points; one point behind second wild card from Eastern Conference

If playoffs started today: Would not qualify  

Remaining games: vs. Lightning, Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET; TSN2, RDS, SUN, NHL.TV); at Capitals, Thursday; vs. Maple Leafs, Saturday

 

The Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers and Philadelphia Flyers have been eliminated from playoff contention in the Eastern Conference.
