Former Toronto Maple Leaf Jared Cowen has a grievance hearing set for mid-October after the Leafs attempted to buy him out this summer, according to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie.
The Maple Leafs acquired the 25-year-old defenceman from the Ottawa Senators as part of the Dion Phaneuf blockbuster last year, but didn't appear in any games with the big club. Toronto placed Cowen on waivers for the purposes of a buyout, but his medical status (hip injury) caused a hold up. The independent arbitrator will decide whether or not to uphold the buyout.
If Cowen wins the hearing, he will receive his full $4.5 million salary while just $1.5 million if he loses, according to McKenzie.
The native of Saskatoon had four assists over 37 games with the Sens in 2015-16, his sixth in the league. Cowen has 15 goals and 31 assists over 249 career games in the NHL.
