Aaron Sanchez is staying in the Toronto Blue Jays' rotation.
General manager Ross Atkins said on Thursday that the 24-year-old All-Star will not be moving to the bullpen as was previously planned and will continue to start until at least the end of the month.
Sanchez is 10-1 with an American League-best 2.71 earned run average and a WHIP of 1.13 in 131.1 innings pitched over 21 starts. The proposed move to the bullpen was to limit his innings. Sanchez, a native of Barstow, California has already eclipsed his career high in innings set a season ago at 92.1.
As such, the team will move to a six-man rotation for the time being with the addition of Francisco Liriano, acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates at the trade deadline on Monday.
Liriano, 32, is set to make his Jays debut on Friday night in Kansas City against the World Series champion Royals. In 21 starts this season with the Pirates, Liriano is 6-11 with a 5.46 ERA and a WHIP of 1.619 over 113.2 IP.
Sanchez will pitch on Saturday.
The Jays complete a four-game set with the Houston Astros on Thursday night, sending JA Happ to the hill. Happ seeks an AL-leading 15th victory on the year.
