The Calgary Flames continue to work on a contract for restricted free agents Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan, general manager Brad Treliving said Wednesday.
"We've obviously got Sean and Johnny's contracts and we continue to work away at that," Treliving told the Calgary Herald. "We'll keep picking away at that."
Monahan said this month he and Gaudreau talk about their situation and have the same goal.
"It's not something that we're battling about or anything like that," Monahan told TSN on July 18. "We both want to be there, we both want to play together, and we want to win in Calgary."
Monahan said he wants a long-term contract and might be willing to take less money if it helps the Flames improve.
"Our goal is to bring a Stanley Cup to Calgary, so if that's what it is, that we can bring other players in, to have a little extra money room and get them in to help us to be a better team, I think that's the idea," he said.
Monahan, a center who will turn 22 on Oct. 12, and Gaudreau, a wing who will be 23 on Aug. 13, have combined for 112 goals and 268 points as linemates over the past two seasons.
Center Mark Scheifele, 23, of the Winnipeg Jets signed an eight-year contract worth $6.1 million annually, and forward Filip Forsberg of the Nashville Predators signed a six-year contract worth $6 million per season, as a restricted free agent this offseason. Forsberg turns 22 on Aug. 13.
"July 1 (the start of NHL free agency) was probably the last time I saw everyone," Treliving said. "We're poking around and trying to see if there's ways to make ourselves better. But there's nothing imminent right now (with Monahan or Gaudreau).
