TORONTO -- Edmonton Oilers rookie center Connor McDavid said he is recovering better than expected from a broken left clavicle but is not sure when he'll be able to return to the ice.
McDavid said he no longer feels pain from the injury, which occurred when he crashed into the end boards Nov. 3 against the Philadelphia Flyers. He was expected to miss four months.
"Obviously it is healing well and I feel like it is a little ahead of schedule," McDavid said. "It feels good and I'm going to start doing everything, but at the end of the day I've got to let it heal."
McDavid said he is not skating yet and does not know when he'll be able to play again.
"I'll let the doctors figure that one out," McDavid said. "They are the smart ones and get paid big money to figure that kind of stuff out. I'm just here trying to make sure I feel good and making sure I am staying in shape for when that day comes."
Unfortunately for McDavid, it won't come Monday against his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs (7:30 p.m. ET; TVA Sports, SN). It's the Oilers' only game at Air Canada Centre this season.
"This one hurts a lot," McDavid said. "You want to play here in your hometown. I was definitely looking forward to this one for sure. It [stinks], but it is what it is. Maybe I'll get a chance to play here for the World Cup. We'll see."
The 2016 World Cup of Hockey will be played Sept. 17-Oct. 1, 2016, with all games played at Air Canada Centre. McDavid will be eligible for Team North America, which will consist of players age 23 or younger prior to Oct. 1, 2016.
McDavid, who had five goals and 12 points in 13 games before the injury, said he was starting to feel comfortable playing in the NHL. The 18-year-old was the first pick of the 2015 NHL Draft.
"Obviously the first little bit is always hard being the young guy coming into the NHL," McDavid said. "But I was starting to feel more comfortable for sure."
