Season series: The Minnesota Wild won two of the three games with the Vancouver Canucks last season, including a 5-3 win at Xcel Energy Center on Feb. 9. Wild forward Nino Niederreiter had three goals and four points. Henrik Sedin had a goal and three assists for the Canucks.
Canucks team scope: Vancouver begins a four-game road trip on Wednesday and will play four games in seven days without defenseman Ben Hutton (lower body) and forward Brandon Sutter (abdominal), who remain out. Each is likely at least a week away from returning, according to coach Willie Desjardins. The Canucks start the trip having lost five of their past six games. "Our record right now is what we deserve," goaltender Ryan Miller told the Canucks website on Tuesday. "We have to find a way to win games. We can be better and we have to be better." The Canucks went 1-4-2 on a recent seven-game road trip that ended on Nov. 18, but are still above .500 (5-4-3) away from Rogers Arena this season.
Wild team scope: Minnesota recalled forward Kurtis Gabriel from Iowa of the American Hockey League on Tuesday ahead of games against Vancouver and the Winnipeg Jets. With Zach Parise still out with a knee injury, the Wild have mixed and matched personnel with their open roster spot based on opponents. Gabriel should provide the Wild with a boost physically. "They have a physical team but this is what we've done. Based on our opponent on a certain night, we can make those switches," coach Mike Yeo said. "It's good to keep switching them out and give them all a chance to spend some time in Iowa and get the development and ice time they need." Parise, defenseman Marco Scandella (lower body) and forward Justin Fontaine (knee) remain out but have been skating; each is getting closer to a return.
