Crosby said he has not spoken to her because "to my knowledge she is not speaking yet."
Although she's a "tough girl," he said she took a "terrible hit. She had an aneurysm and nobody found her— for a while."
He said she's now home, in care and recovering.
"How it's going to go, we don't know yet. She's going to have to struggle back from it the way you struggle back from a traumatic brain injury."
Crosby, her former boyfriend, has provided the first update on her status since April 28, when a post on her official website said that, contrary to online reports, she was not in a coma.
"Joni is still in the hospital but she comprehends, she's alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected," the post said.
On May 4, at a court hearing, her longtime friend, Leslie Morris, was granted the power to make medical decisions for her.
