Hockey Canada announced Sunday that Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby will play for Canada at the 2015 IIHF World Championship.

Crosby and Pittsburgh were eliminated in their Eastern Conference First Round series against the New York Rangers on Friday. The World Championship begins May 1 in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The Penguins captain joins a list of forwards already committed to play for Canada that includes Claude Giroux (Philadelphia Flyers), Taylor Hall (Edmonton Oilers) and Tyler Seguin (Dallas Stars).

Crosby has played once before at the World Championship; as an 18-year-old in 2006 he had tournament-highs of eight goals and 16 points and was named the tournament's best forward, but Canada finished fourth, losing 5-0 to Finland in the bronze-medal game. Crosby is the youngest player in the history of the tournament to lead it in scoring.

Crosby's addition puts Canada's roster at 21: two goaltenders, five defensemen and 14 forwards.

Canada will be part of Group A along with Sweden, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Latvia, France, Germany, and Austria, and opens the tournament May 1 against Latvia.
