After nearly two months of waiting, the secret behind the "Happy Endings" countdown clock has been revealed: It was all just an April Fool's Day prank.
When a Twitter account associated with the canceled show's writers shared a link to the countdown, many fans hoped it meant the beloved series would be making a return. Sadly, that's not the case ... at least, not yet.
Creator David Caspe spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the April Fool's joke, which he says was started by a writer or assistant who has access to the account and was done without his knowledge. Once the buzz surrounding the clock started to build though, there was suddenly interest in an actual reunion.
"It took on a life of its own to the point that actually there was some interest in finding a place to do a few more episodes or an hour-long special," he reveals. "So then I couldn't comment because I wasn't allowed to say anything yet. But as we hit April 1, nothing has really panned out, and I don't want to keep people hanging on, so I have to say something."
Sadly that means the status of the show remains unchanged at this point, but Caspe isn't giving up hope for a reunion yet. "Hopefully one day we'll be able to do an hour-long [special] or a couple stand-alone episodes, and I've talked to the cast about even just doing a five-minute cold open," he says.
Until the day comes when he can announce a return, Caspe hopes the fans don't feel too deceived. "It was just a writers' room bit that kind of got away from them," he explains. "I realize that this could piss off a lot of fans, and our hardcore fans and critics are all we've ever had ... But I also have to say that it was really awesome to see how much love there was for the show."
