MAPLE LEAFS (25-33-5) at PANTHERS (28-22-13)
TV: TSN4, FS-F
Season series: The Florida Panthers have won the first two games against the Toronto Maple Leafs, extending their overall winning streak in the series to four straight. Jimmy Hayes has two goals and Jussi Jokinen has four points for Florida. Nazem Kadri and James van Riemsdyk each have a goal and three points for Toronto.
Maple Leafs team scope: Olli Jokinen's stay in Toronto was a brief one, as the veteran forward was traded to the St. Louis Blues on Monday for forward Joakim Lindstrom and a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. The Maple Leafs also received defenseman Eric Brewer and a 2016 fifth-round pick from the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Korbinian Holzer. Meanwhile, the NHL Trade Deadline passed at 3 p.m. ET with captain Dion Phaneuf and forwards Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul staying put. "I think after you get past the deadline there usually is a sense of relief, regardless of where you are in the standings," general manager Dave Nonis said in video posted by the team. This will be the third stop on a four-game road trip for the Maple Leafs, who have been shut out in the first two games and have gone 162:07 without scoring a goal away from Air Canada Centre.
Panthers team scope: Defenseman Willie Mitchell and forward Dave Bolland, out with upper-body injuries, are skating and close to returning, general manager Dale Tallon said Monday according to the Florida Sun Sentinel. Deadline day was quiet for Florida, which acquired Jaromir Jagr from the New Jersey Devils last Thursday and has since won consecutive games. "We got a good group," Tallon said in comments tweeted by the team. "They all care for each other and want to win." The Panthers (69 points) are two points behind the Boston Bruins for the Eastern Conference's second wild-card spot into the Stanley Cup Playoffs and have four games remaining on a seven-game homestand. Jagr scored his first points, a goal and an assist, in a 4-3 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday. His next goal will be the 718th of his career to move him past Phil Esposito into sole possession of fifth all-time.
