FLAMES (33-25-4) at FLYERS (27-25-11)
TV: SNW, CSN-PH
Season series: The Philadelphia Flyers have won three straight against the Calgary Flames dating to Feb. 25, 2012. In their most recent game, Brayden Schenn and Claude Giroux had goals in the Flyers' 2-1 win in Philadelphia on Feb. 8, 2014.
Flames team scope: Calgary learned Monday that captain and top defenseman Mark Giordano will miss the rest of the season because of a torn biceps tendon. Giordano is tied for the Flames lead with 48 points and averaged more than 25 minutes of ice time per game. He is expected to need 4-5 months to recover. "The next message to the team is this is what we've been dealt," general manager Brad Treliving said, according to the Flames website. "We respond one of two ways: You hang your head or you pick your head up and you say, 'What's next?' At practice Monday the Flames had a top line of Sean Monahan between Mason Raymond and Jiri Hudler, and Joe Colborne centering Johnny Gaudreau and Josh Jooris. Forward Drew Shore was recalled from Adirondack of the American Hockey League after Sven Baertschi was traded to the Vancouver Canucks. It's expected that goalie Karri Ramo will start Tuesday.
Flyers team scope: General manager Ron Hextall traded two of his better defensemen in the days leading up to the NHL Trade Deadline, but said Monday he still thinks the Flyers can make the Stanley Cup Playoffs without defenseman Kimmo Timonen, traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday, and defenseman Braydon Coburn, traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday. "We have a good team right now," Hextall said. "We're six points out of the playoffs. We've come a long way. If you look at us on a good night we're a good team. But our consistency hasn't been good. This team, on paper, we should make the playoffs." It's unlikely defenseman Nicklas Grossmann will play Tuesday; he sustained an upper-body injury Saturday against the New York Rangers. Hextall said Grossmann rode an exercise bike Monday but didn't expect him back on the ice for at least a couple days. Goaltender Anthony Stolarz was returned to Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League on Monday, meaning it's likely that Ray Emery will be available to back up Steve Mason on Tuesday. Emery had missed three games because of a lower-body injury.
