WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Jets scored three second-period goals in a 9:27 span to defeat the Los Angeles Kings 5-2 at MTS Centre on Sunday.

Winnipeg re-established a three-point lead on the Minnesota Wild for the first wild-card spot for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Western Conference. The Jets trail the third-place Chicago Blackhawks by three points in the Central Division.

Los Angeles has lost its past three games after an eight-game winning streak. The loss leaves Los Angeles three points behind the Vancouver Canucks for second place in the Pacific Division. The Kings end their three-game road trip Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers.

Drew Stafford scored his 11th goal for Winnipeg. Jeff Carter's 19th goal in the second period tied the game at 1-1.

However, Winnipeg goals from Tyler Myers and Andrew Ladd 42 seconds apart gave the Jets a 3-1 lead. Ladd's second of the game made it 4-1.

Carter's second goal with 5:11 left in the game made it 4-2 before Blake Wheeler's empty-net goal with 55.3 seconds remaining finished the scoring.

Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson started for the sixth time in the past seven games and had 18 saves. After a one-game absence, Jonathan Quick started for the Kings and allowed four goals on 21 shots. Martin Jones replaced Quick at the start of the third period and finished with 7 saves.

Winnipeg's second line opened the scoring 6:34 into the game. Jiri Tlusty stole the puck from Los Angeles defenseman Robyn Regehr behind Quick's net and worked the puck into the slot, where Stafford jammed it into the net.

Jake Muzzin's outlet pass helped set up the Kings' tying goal in the second period. Muzzin reached Tyler Toffoli in the neutral zone that set up a 3-on-2 rush before Carter snapped a left-side shot past Hutchinson at 7:18.

Carter's two goals helped him to overtake Toffoli for the team lead with 20. He has six goals and six assists in his past 10 games.

Myers broke loose deep in the Los Angeles defensive zone before stepping into the right circle and beating Quick's left glove with a low shot at 10:43 for his sixth goal. Myers has two goals and four assists in eight games since the Jets acquired him and Stafford in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres on Feb. 11.

With the teams playing 4-on-4, Winnipeg's Bryan Little drove to the net. Little's shot hit the post and bounced into the crease, where Ladd scored his 21st goal on a rebound past Quick at 11:25.

Ladd broke open the game with 43.5 seconds left in the second period with a snap shot that bounced off Quick's left glove. Ladd has four goals and three assists in his past seven games.
