Season series: The Florida Panthers and Winnipeg Jets have not played since Dec. 20, 2013. The Panthers and Jetse split the season series last season, with each winning at home 5-2.
Panthers team scope: The Panthers finish their six-game road trip Tuesday winners of three straight and four of their past five. The 20-11-9 record through the first 40 games of the season is Florida's best as a franchise since 1999-00 (23-11-6), according to Elias Sports Bureau. The Panthers are one point behind the Boston Bruins for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The NHL named Panthers left wing Jonathan Huberdeau its Third Star for the week ending Jan. 11. Huberdeau had three goals and two assists in three games. Goaltender Al Montoya spent the past two seasons with Winnipeg before signing with the Panthers last summer as a free agent. Florida coach Gerard Gallant has not announced a starting goaltender for Tuesday. The Panthers begin a five-game homestand Thursday against the Colorado Avalanche and will not play on the road again until Jan. 31.
Jets team scope: The Jets did not practice Monday after finishing a 1-1-1 road trip last weekend through the Pacific Division. In a 5-4 shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, the Jets surrendered 3-1 and 4-2 leads. Winnipeg also gave up a 3-0 lead to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday before rallying for a 5-4 shootout win. Winnipeg has been shorthanded 34 times in its past six games, and leads the League in times shorthanded this season (177). The Jets have slipped to seventh in the League in goals-against per game (2.36). Captain Andrew Ladd has a six-game points streak (four goals, four assists); his career-best points streak is seven games, set in the 2012-13 season. Jets coach Paul Maurice, who took over in Winnipeg one year ago Monday, is one win away from 500 in his NHL coaching career. Defenseman Jacob Trouba (upper body) remains the lone Jets player still out of the lineup. The Jets return to the road for a game against the Dallas Stars on Thursday.
