MAPLE LEAFS (22-17-3) at KINGS (19-13-10)
TV: SNO, FS-W
Season series: Joffrey Lupul scored in the first round of the shootout to help the Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 at Air Canada Centre on Dec. 14. Toronto goaltender James Reimer made 33 saves through overtime, then denied two Kings shooters in the tiebreaker.
Maple Leafs team scope: Toronto ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday. It was the Maple Leafs' first victory since Randy Carlyle was fired as coach Jan. 3. "I definitely feel like that's how we have to approach the game," interim coach Peter Horachek told the Maple Leafs website after the win. "It's a lot harder to play that way, but that's the way we need to play as a team that's trying to get back to where it needs to play." Phil Kessel, who will represent the Maple Leafs at the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game in Columbus on Jan. 25, scored his 19th goal. Prior to Friday, Kessel had been struggling to score; he had two goals in his past 11 games. The Maple Leafs, who have won their past three games at Staples Center, are 3-8-0 since their season-high six-game winning streak ended Dec. 18. Goalie Jonathan Bernier, who was acquired from Los Angeles on June 23, 2013, is 0-1-0 with five goals allowed on 33 shots in two games against his former team.
Kings team scope: Rookie forward Tanner Pearson is out indefinitely because of a fractured left fibula, according to LAKingsInsider.com. Pearson sustained the injury during a 5-4 shootout loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday. He was one of six rookies selected to participate in the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 24 in Columbus. Pearson's 12 goals rank fourth in the NHL among rookies. Tyler Toffoli is also out indefinitely after being diagnosed with mononucleosis. "I think if you look at our team historically over the last however many years, what's made us a good team is when guys go down we have guys that, one, come in and play well, and two, our current players elevate their game. So we have to draw on that," captain Dustin Brown told LAKingsInsider.com Sunday. Forward Marian Gaborik has 14 goals and 10 assists in 20 games against the Maple Leafs in his career.
