CALGARY — Ken Babey was named head coach of the Canadian sledge hockey team for the upcoming season on Thursday.

He'll lead the national team at the Feb. 1-7 World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Leduc, Alta., and the Apr. 24-May 2 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship in Buffalo, N.Y.

Ron Choules and Herve Lord will serve as assistant coaches.

"We are beginning a new four-year Paralympic cycle this season, and we could not be more excited about this coaching staff," Hockey Canada's Shawn Bullock said in a release. "Ken and Ron bring knowledge and success from a number of different levels of the game, and when combined with Herve's understanding of, and passion for sledge hockey, this is the right group to lead Canada's national sledge team this season."

Babey, 60, was head coach of the men's hockey team at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) from 1987-2014. He also served as head coach of the Canadian men's summer under-18 team at the 2000 Four Nations Cup and was an assistant with the Canadian men's team at the 2003 Loto Cup.
