EDMONTON -- It was close, but the Anaheim Ducks were finally able to give themselves breathing room in a 4-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place on Friday.
Sami Vatanen, Kyle Palmieri, Ryan Getzlaf and Nate Thompson (into an empty net) scored for Anaheim (20-6-5), whose 12 previous wins were by one goal.
Tyler Pitlick and Jeff Petry scored for Edmonton (7-18-5), whose losing streak is at three games. The Oilers have lost 14 of their past 15.
Anaheim scored twice 50 seconds into the second period of their sixth consecutive win.
Palmieri and Getzlaf scored on the first two shifts of the period, chasing Oilers goaltender Viktor Fasth, who gave up three goals on 12 shots.
Ben Scrivens replaced Fasth and made seven saves in relief.
Ducks goaltender Frederik Andersen made 21 saves for his 16th win of the season. Andersen has started 17 games in a row.
Vatanen scored a power-play goal at 4:56 of the first period, snapping a shot past Fasth from the top of the face-off circle. The Ducks outshot the Oilers 10-3 in the period.
Palmieri scored seven seconds into the second period to extend the lead to 2-0. Ryan Kesler won the draw back to Vatanen, who spotted Palmieri splitting a pair of Oilers defensemen.
Getzlaf scored 43 seconds later to put the Ducks up 3-0, taking a drop pass from Rene Bourque and beating Fasth with a long wrist shot.
Fasth was making his second consecutive start for the Oilers, who lost the first game of the home-and-home 2-1 at Honda Center on Monday.
Pitlick scored for the Oilers at 15:24 of the period, collecting a puck along the boards after a turnover by Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler. It was the result of a hit by Oilers center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on Fowler along the boards.
Petry cut the lead to 3-2 on the power play at 12:40 of the third period. The defenseman took a pass from Taylor Hall at the blue line and the shot hit the stick of Ducks wing Devante Smith-Pelly and deflected up over Andersen.
Thompson scored into an empty net at 19:43.
The Ducks continue with the second of a five-game Canada road trip at the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday. The Oilers host the New York Rangers on Sunday.
