Season series: The Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs split two games last season; Peter Holland and Joffrey Lupul each scored twice in Toronto's 7-3 win at Air Canada Centre on Dec. 14, its first in nine games against Chicago dating back to Feb. 12, 2003.
Blackhawks team scope: While the rest of the Blackhawks headed for Toronto after a 5-4 shootout win against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, goaltender Scott Darling was reassigned to Rockford of the American Hockey League. Darling started three games after Corey Crawford went down with an upper-body injury last week; he went 2-1-0 with a.933 save percentage and 1.98 goals-against average. Crawford, who backed up Darling in Ottawa, is healthy and expected to start against Toronto, with Antti Raanta as his backup. Raanta, who started the first three games following Crawford's injury, is likely to play Sunday at home against the Winnipeg Jets, according to the Chicago Tribune; if so, it would be his first start in eight days.
Maple Leafs team scope: Toronto returns home after a 4-1 road victory against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday moved the Maple Leafs over .500. Forwards Phil Kessel and Daniel Winnik each had a goal and two assists, more than making up for the loss of Lupul, who is out indefinitely after breaking a bone in his right hand at practice Thursday. Winnik, who took Lupul's place on a line with Kessel and Nazem Kadri, scored the 50th goal of his NHL career in his 500th game. Toronto is 5-0-0 when Kessel scores a goal (he has six) and 0-4-1 when he doesn't. The game will mark the first NHL matchup between Toronto forward James van Riemsdyk and younger brother Trevor van Riemsdyk, a Chicago defenseman.
