Montreal Canadiens defenseman Jarred Tinordi was ejected Sunday night for a thundering check on Washington Capitals defenseman Nate Schmidt.
Schmidt was skating up the ice in the third period when the 6-6 Tinordi leveled him with a shoulder hit that appeared to catch him in the head. Tinordi was called for elbowing, though his elbow was down when he made contact.
No hearing has been scheduled or is expected to result from the hit, though the NHL's Stephane Quintal has until Wednesday to decide.
After the hit, Tinordi fought Washington's Chris Brown, who came to Schmidt's aid. Tinordi ended up 24 penalty minutes in the game.
Capitals coach Barry Trotz said after the game that Schmidt had passed the concussion protocol and appeared to be fine.
"He took a pretty good jolt there, and I love the fact that Brownie jumped in there and stood up up for Schmidty," he told reporters. "That won me big points with Brownie there."
Tinordi, Montreal's first-round pick in 2010, is trying to stick with the Canadiens after playing 22 games last season and 30 games overall.
