The Calgary Flames claimed netminder Joey MacDonald off waivers on Monday in hopes that he can help out a thin and injured goaltending situation.
The Flames needed a goalie after starter Mikka Kiprusoff sprained his MCL last Tuesday in a game against the Detroit Red Wings.
Kiprusoff is listed as day-to-day and was on the ice Monday morning. If all goes well, he could come off Injured Reserve and play Wednesday with MacDonald expected to be Kiprusoff's backup.
The 33-year-old MacDonald, who saw some time with the Red Wings last season, was waived by the team on Sunday with the intention of sending him down to AHL Grand Rapids.
In 14 games last season, MacDonald had a 2.16 GAA and .912 save percentage. He is 31-48-13, with a 3.04 goals-against average and .903 save percentage in parts of six seasons with Detroit, Boston, Toronto and the New York Islanders.
