The Maple Leafs are starting to trickle back to the city to get ready for the 2012-13 season even as they contemplate whether there will even be one, according to The Toronto Star.
"It's nice to get back and see everybody," said forward Clarke MacArthur. "It was a long summer. The lockout is looming, but it's nice to come back and get in shape. You have to be professional about it and train like you're going to start on time."
MacArthur scrimmaged with about two dozen Leafs and Marlies at the MasterCard Centre on Tuesday. The likes of Phil Kessel, Mike Komisarek and Tyler Bozak worked out in Toronto for the first time with a few who have been in the city for a while, like Jake Gardiner, Nikolai Kulemin, Tim Connolly, Jay McClement and Nazem Kadri.
They're well aware they may be training for nothing. The collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players expires Sept. 15 and the NHL has said it will lock out the players if no deal is reached by then. Kessel says players have to put that out of their minds.
"You've just got to do the same things you do to train for every year," said Kessel. "Then see what happens (with the talks)."
Komisarek, one of the team's player representatives with the NHLPA, was in New York last week during contract talks. He said players are updated daily via email and an in-house app for their mobile phones.
