Toronto draft pick Jonas Valanciunas has begun working on the release agreement with his club team in Lithuania in an effort to join the Raptors next season, according to reports.
After working out the details of his release, Valanciunas will then be forced to pay a $2.4-million buyout -- $550,000 of which can be covered by the Raptors -- to his club team, Lietuvos Rytas, before he can sign in Toronto. There is no set timetable for when Valanciunas will join the team.
The 7-foot, 240-pound centre was selected with the fifth pick in the 2011 NBA Draft and was voted as the best international player not in the league in a general manager's poll released in January.
Valanciunas, 20, averaged 10.8 points per game, 7.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks while shooting 63.4 per cent from the field with Lietuvos Rytas last season.
