NOTTINGHAM, England -- Canadian Lucian Bute's five-year reign as IBF super-middleweight champion is over.
The Romanian native was beaten in the fifth round Saturday by Carl Froch in the new champion's hometown of Nottingham, England.
The referee stopped the fight with Bute taking a pounding on the ropes and going down after a flurry of punches from Froch.
The 32-year-old Bute won the title in 2007 and had defended it nine times.
Bute was able to get in a few punches in each round but was hammered in the third by the 34-year-old Froch.
Bute tried to keep his distance beginning in the fourth round but Froch kept on attacking, leaving the defending champion with no option but to hold on for the bell.
Froch's record is now 29-2-0, while Bute's first loss leaves him with a record of 30-1-0.
