Match.com

The Moncton Wildcats took the first of a two-game New Year's series against Maritimes Division rival, the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Allan Saulnier scored twice, including once short handed, and set up another as Moncton defeated visiting Saint John 5-2 on Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Marek Hrivik had a goal and two assists for the Wildcats(18-19-3), Patrick Delisle-Houde scored a goal and an assist while Ryan Penny added a single goal. James Melindy chipped in with two assists.

Kevin Gagne and Zack Phillips responded for the Sea Dogs (28-12-2), who have lost three games straight for the first time since starting the season 0-3-0.

Roman Will made 32 saves, earning second star of the game and the win, as Mathieu Corbeil stopped 23 shots in defeat.

Moncton went 1 for 2 on the power play while Saint John failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.

These two clubs will meet again on January 2nd when the Wildcats host the Sea Dogs in the back end of their mini series.

Penny opened the scoring just 23 seconds into the first period to give Moncton a 1-0 lead.

The lead lasted under five minutes as Gagne tied the game at 5:10.

Phillips scored at 7:04, giving Saint John a 2-1 lead to take into the second period.

Special teams were important for the Wildcats in the middle period as Saulnier scored his first of the game, short handed at 7:27, and Delisle-Houde followed him up with a power-play goal at 14:56.

Leading after 40 minutes of play, Hrivik scored at 6:40 to give Moncton a 4-2 advantage.

{allcanada} Kings beat Canucks 4-1 to open homestand

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Anze Kopitar ended a career-worst, 17-game goal drought less than five minutes after defenseman Matt Greene's go-ahead goal in the second period, and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1 Saturday night in the NHL's final game of 2011.

Coming off a 1-0 overtime loss at Winnipeg on Thursday with backup goalie Jonathan Bernier in net, the Kings began a six-game homestand with their fourth victory in six games since Darryl Sutter took over as coach.

Justin Williams had a goal and an assist, Brad Richardson also scored and Jonathan Quick made 27 saves. Rookie Andrei Loktionov had two assists.

Kevin Bieksa scored Vancouver's goal and Roberto Luongo stopped 29 shots. The Canucks, who came in with the league's best percentage on the power play, were 0 for 4—including a four-minute stretch of the second period after Kings center Mike Richards was sent off for cutting Ryan Kesler with a high stick.

Green put the Kings ahead 2-1 at 8:20 of the second with a one-timer from the right point after getting a pass from Loktionov. Kopitar added his 11th goal at 13:08, slipping behind the defense with a short pass from Williams and putting a nice deke on Luongo before flipping the puck inside the right post with the three-time All-Star goalie spread-eagled on his stomach.

Williams ended the scoring on a power play, redirecting Jarret Stoll's wrist shot from the high slot at 9:33 of the third period while Daniel Sedin was off for hooking Stoll.

The Kings outshot Vancouver 15-7 through the opening period, but could do no better than a 1-all tie. The Canucks scored on their first shot on net, as Bieksa beat Quick to the stick side at the 3:06 mark with a one-timer from 35 feet after Sedin backhanded the puck to him in the slot.

Richardson tied it at 9:13 of the period, scoring on his second whack at the puck after teammate Trevor Lewis overskated the rebound of Loktionov's sharp-angle shot from the right of the net.

Richards had a great chance to give Los Angeles the lead with about 3 minutes left in the first, but his backhander from the right of the crease slid behind Luongo and off the left post after Vancouver's Sami Salo turned the puck over to Richards deep in the zone.

Notes: Henrik Sedin also got an assist on Bieksa's goal for his 46th point, giving him the league lead by one over Philadelphia's Claude Giroux. … The Kings' previous nine games on New Year's Eve all were on the road. The last time they played at home was in 1991, when the Canucks got all of their goals in the third period against Daniel Berthiaume for a 5-3 win. … Vancouver finished the calendar year 54-24-6, and the Kings were 43-29-11. … Los Angeles has allowed just 11 goals over its last seven games following an 8-2 loss at Chicago. … This was only the second time in 18 games that the Kings scored more than two goals in regulation. … Despite Williams' goal, the Kings are 3 for 47 on the power play over their last 13 games. Their opponents are 2 for 47 during that same stretch. Los Angeles has killed off 26 straight short-handed situations. … Kopitar had 49 shots on net during his 17-game drought, which began after his goal on Nov. 22 at St. Louis. … The Kings have garnered 12 standings points in their last seven games after losing six of their previous seven.

use CueTools to "split" into individual files and .flac as well.
I also split some I have found in single .flac files.

Brampton would hold a one-goal lead until 16:24 of the second period when Goodrow scored on a 5 on 3 to make it 2-0.

With 57 seconds left of 5-on-4 power-play time, the Battalion once again capitalized as Blujus made it 3-0 just 25 seconds later at 16:49.

Midway through the third period, with the Battalion once again on the power play, Carrick gave the Battalion a 4-0 lead at 10:23.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP)—Zach Bogosian and Blake Wheeler scored power-play goals and the Winnipeg Jets won their third straight, 3-2 over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

Andrew Ladd also scored for Winnipeg and the crowd gave the players a standing ovation after the victory.

The Leafs have now lost three straight.

Toronto goalie James Reimer stopped 32 shots.

Jets winger Antti Miettinen, claimed on waivers from Tampa Bay on Dec. 13, picked up two assists for his first points with his new club.

Clarke MacArthur and Phil Kessel scored for Toronto, which fired 24 shots at Ondrej Pavelec.

Despite not getting their first shot on net until 7 minutes into the game, the Leafs finished the first period with a 1-0 lead on MacArthur's power-play goal.

Ten seconds after Ladd was put in the penalty box for high-sticking, Carl Gunnarsson sent the puck across the crease to MacArthur, who caught Pavelec out of position at 13:59 for his 11th goal of the season.

The Jets outshot the Leafs 15-8 in the opening period and 13-4 in the second.

Winnipeg jumped out to a 2-1 lead early in the second on goals by Bogosian and Ladd.

Bogosian got things going when he scored on the power play at 2:51. Then just 4 seconds after a Toronto penalty expired, Ladd tapped in a Kyle Wellwood pass from behind the net to make it 2-1 at 5:26.

Toronto's top sniper quickly made it 2-2 when Pavelec couldn't snag Kessel's shot with his outstretched glove at 7:07. It was Kessel's 21st of the season.

Wheeler broke the tie on a power play at 10:50 when a screened Reimer couldn't make the stop.

The Leafs doubled their shots on goal in the third period, but Pavelec held the line in his 32nd start of the season.

The Jets, who only play four games at home in January, hit the road for a four-game trip that starts Wednesday in Montreal.

The Leafs host their next four games, beginning with Tampa Bay on Tuesday and Winnipeg on Thursday.

NOTES: Jets forward Bryan Little (lower body) was placed on the injured list earlier in the day. … Winnipeg defenseman Dustin Byfuglien missed his third straight game with a lower-body injury.

{allcanada} Fleischmann's 2 lift Panthers past Canadiens, 3-2

Match.com

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP)—Tomas Fleischmann scored two goals, including an empty-netter with 40.2 seconds remaining that ended up being the game-winner as the Florida Panthers beat the Montreal Canadiens, 3-2, on Saturday night.

Panthers goaltender Scott Clemmensen bounced back from his worst outing of the season the night before against the New York Rangers by stopping 17 of Montreal's last 18 shots. He replaced Jose Theodore 4:16 into the second period after Theodore left with a lower body injury.

The Canadiens struck first at the 5:37 mark of the first period when Travis Moen blasted a slap shot from the left circle 47 feet out past Theodore off assists from Lars Eller and Tomas Kaberle. It was Moen's first goal against the Panthers this season.

Fleischmann tied the game with a power-play goal 3:46 into the second period off assists from Stephen Weiss and Brian Campbell and Shawn Matthias broke the tie 3:08 into the third with his seventh goal of the season.

After Fleischmann's empty-netter appeared to seal the victory, Montreal's Erik Cole made it a one-goal game at the 19:30 mark off assists from Yannick Weber David Desharnais.

Clemmensen turned away another Moen shot with 14 seconds left and then got help when Mike Weaver and Weiss blocked shots in the closing seconds.

Montreal lost its second straight game, both in the Sunshine State and goaltender Carey Price dropped to 13-14-7 on the season with the loss as he surrendered three goals on 35 shots in the loss.

These two soon-to-be division rivals went at it hard on both ends of the ice with chippiness from both sides. The second period ended with a scrum in front of the Panthers' net that resulted in double minor penalties for Florida's Erik Gudbranson and Montreal's P.K. Subban for slashing and roughing. Panthers enforcer Krys Barch also was given a 10-minute game misconduct.

Florida maintained its four-point lead over the Winnipeg Jets, 3-2 winners over Toronto, in the Southeast Division and stayed five points ahead of the Washington Capitals.

NOTES: With his assist on Fleischmann's tying goal Weiss tied Olli Jokinen for the most assists all-time in Panthers history with 231. . Fleischmann has scored three goals in two meetings with the Canadiens this season. . Florida finished the month of December 5-2-1 on home ice. . The crowd of 20,098 was the third largest crowd of the season. . The Canadiens continue to struggle on the road as they fell to 9-11-1 away from home and are now 0-2 against the Panthers this season.

{allcanada} Butler lifts Senators to 3-2 SO win over Sabres

Match.com

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP)—Bobby Butler scored the decisive goal in the fifth round of the shootout to lift the Ottawa Senators to a 3-2 win over the slumping Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.

Chris Neil and Matt Carkner scored and Erik Condra had two assists for the Senators, who improved to 5-1-1 in their past seven games. Craig Anderson stopped 26 shots.

Brad Boyes and Paul Gaustad scored and Jordan Leopold had two assists for the Sabres, who dropped to 1-5-1 in their past seven games. Jhonas Enroth was by far the busiest goalie in stopping 44 shots, including getting his shoulder up to get a piece of Jason Spezza's snap shot from in close with 12 seconds left in overtime.

Butler sealed the win after each team had scored twice in the shootout and after Buffalo's Drew Stafford didn't fool Anderson in trying to jam his attempt on the short side.

Driving to the net, Butler faked several shots to get Enroth on his heels. Enroth eventually backed up inside his own net, and Butler easily flipped it over the fallen goalie.

The Senators outshot the Sabres 29-20 through two periods and 46-28 overall. And that didn't include the six posts Ottawa players hit: four alone in the opening 20 minutes as the Senators rang in the new year.

The string of shots hitting posts began in the opening minute, when Condra snapped a shot off the post from the left circle. And it didn't end until there was a minute left in the third period, when Butler streaked up the left side and slapped a shot off the near post.

The Senators were coming off a 4-3 overtime win over Calgary on Friday, in a game Ottawa rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win on Daniel Alfredsson's goal.

Ottawa proved once again it's not how a team starts but how it finishes. The Senators never had the lead until the shootout was over.

The teams traded three goals during a 4:20 span early in the second period.

Carkner tied the game at 1 by driving in from the right point and snapping a shot past Enroth. After Gaustad tipped in Leopold's shot from the right boards, the Senators tied it 6:15 into the frame when Neil converted on a partial break by faking a forehand shot and beating Enroth with a backhander.

Boyes had opened the scoring four minutes in by converting a rebound in front.

The Sabres had a goal disallowed with 11:52 remaining because the net had been knocked off its posts.

Driving up the left side, Patrick Kaleta got in around Carkner and was hauled down by the defenseman while driving to the net. Kaleta got a shot off, and the puck dribbled into the slot where Gaustad flipped it in just after Kaleta crashed into the net.

Carkner was not called for a penalty though he clearly got his hand on Kaleta's shoulder in pushing the player to the ice.

NOTES: Senators D Sergei Gonchar didn't play after being struck in the head by a puck during the pregame warmup. That led to D Brian Lee being rushed into action after he was scheduled to be a healthy scratch. … Prior to the game, the Sabres called up defenseman T.J. Brennan from AHL Rochester to bolster a banged-up defense that lost high-priced veteran Christian Ehrhoff to an upper-body injury in a 3-1 loss at Washington a day earlier. This is the third time Brennan has been called up this season. … Sabres C Nathan Gerbe returned after missing 10 games with a concussion. That made rookie RW Zack Kassian a healthy scratch. … Senators Spezza failed to register a point in Buffalo for the first time in 15 games. It's a streak and which he had 13 goals and 16 assists dating to Feb. 22, 2007.

PHILADELPHIA -- Outside of a few trips to town as a visiting player, Eric Lindros hadn't spent any significant amount of time in Philadelphia since the Flyers traded him to the New York Rangers in the summer of 2001.

While he may have been gone more than 10 years, the fans who cheered for him during his eight seasons with the Flyers showed how much big No. 88 still meant to them.

Lindros received one of the two biggest ovations from the 45,808 fans packed into Citizens Bank Park for the 2012 Molson Canadian NHL Winter Classic Alumni Game on Saturday.

"It was real special," Lindros said. "It truly was. There's great fans here, all 45,000 and I know there were some that couldn't make it. It really was nice to walk into such a warm environment."

Teammates also noticed how loud the fans were for Lindros.

"When Eric was here he was one of the hardest-working guys," goalie Neil Little told NHL.com. "Just a pure powerhouse and that's Philadelphia hockey. I'm sure they remember and they gave him a nice round of applause. That was nice to see."

"It was great for him to be here," added Eric Desjardins. "It's nice to see them put that stuff behind. For the fans, I don't think there was ever anything between the fans and Big E. Today was a great chance for them to show their appreciation. They did it with class. It was great."

Chris Therien, who spent most of his playing career as one of Lindros' teammates, told NHL.com he saw Lindros lifted by the reception he received.

"Eric looked really happy," said Therien. "He looked like there's been something put to bed here. I don't know if it was wearing on him, but as far as I was concerned, the fans appreciated Eric as a hockey player and it looked like a great weight off his shoulders today."

Lindros won a Hart Trophy and led the Flyers to the 1997 Stanley Cup Final, but his tenure with the Flyers was marked by constant clashes between then-GM Bob Clarke and the Lindros family, and ended with Lindros sitting out the 2000-01 season as a restricted free agent and demanding a trade, which happened when he was moved to the Rangers in August 2001.

If fans were unhappy with anything that went on during Lindros' tumultuous tenure, they certainly showed they moved on.

"The issues weren't necessarily between him and the fans," said Flyers Alumni coach Keith Primeau. "The fans loved him. … It was nice to see. Whatever the reason was, it was nice to see their appreciation for him."

And any lingering issues with Lindros and Clarke, who wore the 'C' for Philadelphia's alumni, also disappeared.

"I'm sure a lot of guys didn't know how the reaction would be," said Rick Tocchet. "They were talking and it was just like business as usual. … That was pretty cool."

"It was good," said Lindros. "We talked this morning, and it was great."

"He looked like there's been something put to bed here. I don't know if it was wearing on him, but as far as I was concerned, the fans appreciated Eric as a hockey player and it." -- Chris Therien

Lindros also showed some of the skills that made him such a dominant player in his prime. In the first period, he took a Mark Recchi pass and started a 2-on-1 break, which he finished with a pass across to John LeClair for an easy goal.

"Just like the old says," said Desjardins. "I was third guy in and Big E took a look at me and saw Johnny on the other side. The odds were better to pass to big John. It was great, it was in the net."

Lindros had another chance in the game's final minutes, after the Rangers pulled their goalie, but he missed an empty net.

"I only missed it by four feet," he said. "Have to work on my long-range shooting. We'll get that, maybe 15 years from now we'll try it again."

If he does, he wouldn't mind doing it again in Philadelphia.

"It was really a special day," he said. "This has been great. Really great."

{allcanada} Moulson, Tavares combine for 5 points, Isles win

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP)—The New York Islanders have finally found a winning formula: welcome travel-weary Western Canadian teams to the friendly confines of the Nassau Coliseum.

The only problem is, the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers have no other scheduled trips to Long Island.

The Islanders took care of business Saturday in their final game of 2011 behind the offense of star forwards John Tavares and Matt Moulson, who combined for five points in New York's 4-1 victory over the Oilers.

Moulson had a goal and two assists, and Tavares and P.A. Parenteau both added one of each for the Islanders, who took advantage of shaky goalie Devan Dubnyk in the convincing victory.

Tavares and Moulson helped set up each other for goals in the first period, and Parenteau and Matt Martin connected in the second for the Islanders, who won their second straight following a three-game losing streak.

"Now it's about being consistent," Moulson said.

The Islanders (13-17-6) are still languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. They have won four of 10, with a pair of two-game winning streaks following two three-game skids. Evgeni Nabokov made 28 saves for New York, which has gone 5-2-4 against Western Conference opponents.

"We have to continue to focus on things that give us our identity," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said.

New York scored on four of its first nine shots at Dubnyk, more than enough offense to knock off the sliding Oilers, who are 0-3 on their seven-game road trip forced by the world junior hockey championship in Edmonton.

The Oilers (15-19-3) are third from the bottom in the West, with a visit to conference-leading Chicago looming on Monday.

"It's not what we wanted, that's for sure. We're at the bottom, looking up," Oilers defenseman Andy Sutton said. "We have stretches where we play really well, and I feel like we become a totally different team for stretches of time. I think all teams go through that, it's just ours seem to be lasting a little longer."

The Oilers have lost seven of eight and nine of 12, and are 3-11-1 in their past 15. Outside of poor goaltending, Edmonton was also done in by the undisciplined play of Ben Eager, who took two roughing penalties that led to power-play goals by Tavares and Parenteau.

Eager, clearly unfazed by his costly penalties, was also whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct and given a 10-minute misconduct in the second period.

"We became a little bit unglued as the game went on, and certainly we took some bad penalties," Edmonton coach Tom Renney said. "As the game went on, we became less engaged and had less ability to do what we needed to do to be a good, winning hockey club."

Sam Gagner scored for Edmonton in between Tavares and Moulson's goals in the first period to briefly forge a tie, but it didn't last long. Dubnyk finished with 25 saves, including all 16 in the third period when the game was out of reach.

"There was no way I was taking him out," Renney said. "It was an opportunity to battle back, and he did."

The Islanders nearly took a 2-1 lead with 6:45 left in the first—just 17 seconds after Gagner scored—but Moulson had a goal waved off because he kicked the puck into the net. The no-goal was followed by a Grinch-related song played by the arena organist.

No matter. Moulson eventually gave the Islanders the edge when he scored with 2:05 left in the first, converting a perfect, cross-zone, spin-o-rama pass from Tavares.

Parenteau made it 3-1 at 3:19 of the second, while Eager was in the box a second time. Parenteau whipped a shot from the high slot off a feed from Moulson past Dubnyk. Martin pushed New York's lead to three goals just 46 seconds later when he brought the puck out of the corner and beat Dubnyk with a shot from a poor angle, slightly above the goal line—a goal he would certainly like back.

"We'd like the whole game back," Renney said. "If we could've come out in the second period and just tidied up a few things, I really thought we were in good shape to win. We got behind, and then it became turnover city, and that became contagious. You can't win games turning the puck over and trying to do things by yourself. We paid the price."

Edmonton came out quickly and put pressure on the Islanders for the first few minutes, but failed to connect against Nabokov. The tide turned soon after when the Oilers broke down in their own zone and let Tavares take advantage.

With Eager serving his first roughing penalty, Tavares passed the puck out of the lower left corner to Parenteau and went to the net. Dubnyk came way out, and Parenteau got the puck back to Tavares, who went around the overmatched goalie and easily tucked the puck into the vacated net behind him at 3:44.

Tavares, who also had a goal and assist in the Islanders' 3-1 win over Calgary on Thursday, briefly left the ice in the second period after he was hit by Sutton several seconds after taking a shot. Tavares appeared to hurt his right side or shoulder, but returned soon after a trip to the dressing room.

"I just try to bring the same work ethic to every game," Tavares said. "We just have to keep this going."

NOTES: The past three No. 1 overall NHL draft picks were in the game: Tavares in 2009, and Edmonton's Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins the following two years. … Sutton returned after serving an eight-game suspension for charging Carolina's Alexei Ponikarovsky on Dec. 7. … Tavares has assisted on 11 of Moulson's 17 goals. … Islanders D Steve Staios returned after missing seven games with an undisclosed upper body injury.

{allcanada} Calgary (18-16-5) at Nashville (20-14-4)

Match.com

Calgary (18-16-5) at Nashville (20-14-4)

The fatigue that comes with the grind of a seven-game road trip seems to be catching up with the Calgary Flames.

The Nashville Predators would like to take advantage of a weary opponent as they look to move up the Western Conference standings.

Hoping to avoid a third straight loss, the Flames continue their trip Sunday afternoon against the Predators in the NHL's lone New Year's Day game.

Heading into their final meeting of 2011-12, the Flames look to salvage a split of the season series. Nashville has won two of the first three meetings, outscoring Calgary 4-2.

With the World Junior Championships being held in Calgary, the Flames are spending nearly two weeks on the road. Following this game, they'll wrap up the trip by facing Alex Ovechkin on Tuesday in Washington and against defending Stanley Cup champion Boston on Thursday.

The Flames have split the first four games after falling 4-3 to Ottawa on Friday. Rene Bourque, Curtis Glencross and Chris Butler gave Calgary a 3-0 edge after one period, but rookie Leland Irving failed to protect the lead despite finishing with a career-best 45 saves in his third pro game.

"In the first, we weren't that sharp anyway," said Bourque, who has 12 goals this season but only one in his last 10 games against Nashville. "We didn't play well (Friday night), plain and simple. We really didn't deserve to be up 3-0."

After wins over Northwest Division-leading Vancouver and in a shootout over league-worst Columbus to open the trip, the Flames (18-16-5) have failed to keep the momentum going by wasting early leads.

Prior to losing to the Senators, Calgary led the New York Islanders 1-0 in the first period Thursday before falling 3-1. The Flames' four losses when leading after one period are the second-most in the NHL behind Carolina (five).

Following a rare night off, Miikka Kiprusoff is expected back in goal for the Flames on Sunday. Kiprusoff is 1-2-0 with a 1.36 goals-against average versus Nashville this season, and stopped 26 shots in a 1-0 home win over the Predators on Nov. 29.

Despite making 43 saves on Dec. 13 in Nashville, Kiprusoff was on the short end of the Flames' 2-1 loss. He had won his previous six starts in Tennessee, posting a 1.31 GAA and two shutouts.

The Predators (20-14-4) return home after winning their second straight game in a shootout, 2-1 over St. Louis on Friday.

Martin Erat scored the only goal in the tiebreaker while Pekka Rinne made 35 saves through overtime and kept the Blues scoreless on all five shootout attempts.

"Not only are we getting great goaltending from (Rinne) but we are better defensively," said Predators coach Barry Trotz, whose team is seventh in the West.

With the win, Rinne improved to 8-1-0 with a 2.54 GAA in 10 games since Dec. 8. He's 2-1-0 with a 0.67 GAA versus the Flames this season, including a 33-save effort in a 2-0 road victory Oct. 22.

Thanks mostly to Rinne, Nashville has given up just two goals in its last two games after being lit up for 19 while losing three of its previous four.

While the Predators are enjoying a brief surge, they clearly miss leading scorer Shea Weber (eight goals, 21 assists), who's missed three straight games with a concussion. There is no target date for his return.

David Legwand, who leads the Predators with 10 goals, has none in his last five games versus Calgary. Erat, who has just eight goals in 30 games this season, has two in his last seven matchups with the Flames.
