MONTREAL -- Canadian tennis player Aleksandra Wozniak will miss several tournaments while she recovers from an eye injury.

The native of Blainville, Que., was forced to retire during her semifinal match at the Albuquerque Challenger on Saturday when a ball deflected off the net and struck Wozniak in the eye.

Wozniak, who was trailing in the third set, was positioned close to the net on the play.

After meeting with a specialist in Montreal, she learned there is hemorrhaging in the back of her eye near the retina but will not require surgery. However, her recovery time will force her to withdraw from Challenger events in Las Vegas, Kansas City and Troy, Mich.

Wozniak, who is ranked No. 110 in the world, still hopes to play WTA events in Europe in October before the end of the season.

"It was an unfortunate accident," said Wozniak in a statement. "I hope my eye heals quickly so that I can get back on the court as soon as possible."
