{allcanada} 'Kennedys' tops Gemini noms

There were nine children in the famous Kennedy family, but 10 appears to be the clan's lucky number when it comes to TV award nominations.

The controversial mini-series The Kennedys garnered 10 nominations when the list for the 2011 Gemini Awards was released on Wednesday.

This comes on the heels of the 10 Emmy Award nominations The Kennedys received last month.

The Geminis honour the best in Canadian TV while the Emmys honour the best in American TV. The Kennedys is eligible for awards on both sides of the border because the project was a Canada-U.S. co-production, airing on History Television in Canada and on the obscure ReelzChannel in the U.S.

As always, the ludicrously lengthy list of Gemini nominees included some puzzlers worthy of William Shatner's Weird or What?, although that quirky History Television series deserved its two Gemini nods.

Leading all nominees was CTV's Flashpoint with 17, followed by Jason Priestley's HBO Canada series Call Me Fitz with 16. Besides The Kennedys, the series Living in Your Car (HBO Canada) and The Pillars of The Earth (The Movie Network and Movie Central) also received 10 nominations apiece.

Notable oddities included the controversial and cancelled Skins, which was panned by critics, demonized by parents' groups and ignored by audiences, being nominated for best dramatic series. It aired on The Movie Network and Movie Central in Canada and on MTV in the U.S.

The cancelled Showcase series Endgame, which got a fairly warm reception from critics but failed to find a large audience, also was nominated for best dramatic series.

The main Gemini Awards presentation will be televised live on CBC on Sept. 7.
