TORONTO -- Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Ricky Ray, Winnipeg defensive end Odell Willis, Hamilton kicker Justin Medlock and Eskimos running back Jerome Messam were named Wednesday as the Gibson's Finest CFL players for the month of July.
Ray, who has the Eskimos off to a 5-0 start, completed 102 of 152 passes, and was named offensive player of the month. The veteran quarterback threw 10 touchdown passes, just one shy of his total for the entire 2010 season. Ray has thrown only one interception this season.
Willis was named the defensive player of the month, and leads the CFL with seven sacks. He also had 11 tackles. Willis's success has contributed to the Blue Bombers 4-1 record.
Medlock, who handles the Tiger-Cats' punting and kicking duties, was named special teams player of the month. Medlock, in his first season with Hamilton, averaged 41.9 yards a punt. He connected on 12 of 14 field goal attempts, while contributing 52 of the Ticats 132 points this season.
Messam, who is fourth in the CFL in rushing with 274 yards on 55 carries, was named Canadian player of the month. He also caught four passes for 30 yards and scored two touchdowns during July. This is Messam's first season with the Eskimos after being acquired from the B.C. Lions during training camp.
