COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Top-seed Shahar Peer and Canadian Eugenie Bouchard advanced to the second round of the inaugural WTA Citi Open.
Peer defeated Japanese qualifier Ryoko Duda 6-4, 6-2. She became the highest ranked women's tennis player from Israel earlier this year but came having lost four straight first-round matches.
Bouchard of Westmount, Que., who American Alison Riske 6-3, 6-2. She'll next face second-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia, who beat American qualifier Alexandra Mueller 6-2, 6-2 in Mueller's first career WTA main draw match.
China's Shuai Zhang upset fourth-seeded Jelena Dokic of Australia 6-3, 6-4. Eighth-seeded Alberta Brianti of Italy, Americans Madison Brengle, Irina Falconi and Jill Craybas, Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski and Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva also advanced.
