A young Winnipegger who shot to fame after her YouTube rendition of a Lady Gaga tune went viral has now signed to a record label in her family's native Philippines.
Ten-year-old Maria Aragon shot to fame earlier this year when her YouTube home video of Lady Gaga's song, Born This Way, attracted more than 12 million views after the pop star Tweeted about the youngster's rendition. Now in the Philippines with her family, Aragon has signed with Star Records Philippines, according to a Tweet from the pint-sized singer heading into Grade 6 in September.
"I can't believe it!" Aragon Tweeted on her mariiiaofficial Twitter account Friday. "Thank you for everybody's support and love. Because of you I am now here in the Philippines and signed under Star Records!"
Aragon sang on stage with Lady Gaga at a Toronto concert in March, made television appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in Los Angeles and Good Morning America in New York, and most recently sang O Canada for Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton before a crowd of 300,000 at a Canada Day celebration in Ottawa earlier this month.
According to Star Records' website, the label exists "to be of service to all Filipinos worldwide by providing total entertainment experience through music and quality video products which upholds the true Filipino values and sentiments."
Maria and her family were not available to comment.
