Calling all Canadian songwriters!

Canada's Walk of Fame is offering a $25,000 prize for the Canadian who wins a new competition to help write "a song for Canada." The contest is open from June 1 to July 15.

The winning submission will "describe the true essence of the Canadian identity, and what makes (us) proud to be a Canadian, in a 250-word poem or essay," the Walk of Fame announced Tuesday in a press release. "Hopefuls are also encouraged to submit a vocal or musical interpretation with their written content that may later be featured during the performance of the song (yet to be titled) when it is debuted nationally this October, during the Canada's Walk of Fame Televised Awards on Global and Slice."

Ten finalists will be chosen by a panel that will include Nikki Yanofsky. The public can offer their comments during the process. The ultimate contest winner will win a $25,000 cash prize, $10,000 worth of recording time at Metalworks Studios, and a trip for two to Toronto for the Walk's televised awards and Inductee Ball in October.

Stephan Moccio will be among the creative team who will help the contest winner write the final song. Moccio penned the 2010 Vancouver Olympics theme song I Believe.

"We want to create a song in keeping with the achievements of this outstanding country that will resonate with all Canadians and inspire our children," said Peter Soumalias, founding director of Canada's Walk of Fame.
