JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- Canada's Frank Dancevic defeated top-seeded Feliciano Lopez in the first round of the SA Tennis Open on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old from Niagara Falls, Ont., dispatched the defending champion from Spain, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (8) in a two-hour, eight-minute tussle broken by rain.
Lopez became the fifth out of eight seeded players to fall in the first round.
Earlier, third-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia and seventh-seeded Rainer Schuettler of Germany were knocked out as the seeded players struggled in the high altitude in Johannesburg.
Only No. 4 Kevin Anderson, No. 6 Adrian Mannarino and No. 8 Michal Przysiezny survived the opening round.
