Canada will host the inaugural world junior open water swimming championships next year.
The event will be held in the Niagara region's Welland Recreational Waterway in August 2012, Swimming Canada said Thursday in a release.
"FINA is delighted to award the first FINA world junior open water swimming championships to Canada," said Margo Mountjoy, a member of the FINA bureau.
The three-day competition is expected to draw over 200 teenage participants from around the globe.
"The Welland Waterway and the flatwater centre is a perfect setting for open water racing," said Swimming Canada chief executive officer Pierre Lafontaine. "The water conditions are stable and the spectators are able to follow the race at arms length of the field of play.
"It will make for a great festival of swimming."
