MORRIS, Man. -- Prince Edward Island's Robert Campbell edged Manitoba's Terry McNamee 4-3 to win the Canadian mixed curling championship Saturday.
McNamee stole one in the ninth end to tie the match 3-3 before Campbell's 10th-end steal sealed the win.
"(Third Rebecca Jean MacPhee) made a raise back. We had one buried in the top four," Campbell said. "He (McNamee) tried a double runback and just missed, so I didn't have to throw the last one, fortunately."
It's the second mixed title for Campbell, who last won the tournament in 1989. It was the first title for MacPhee, second Robbie Doherty and lead Jackie Reid.
It's also the third mixed crown for P.E.I. since the championship began in 1964.
Campbell lost just once in the round robin, earning the bye to the final and finishing with an overall 11-1 record. Two players from the winning team will now represent Canada at the 2011 world mixed doubles championship next April. Earlier on Saturday, McNamee used a breakout seventh end against Nova Scotia's Paul Flemming to advance to the final.
McNamee broke a 3-3 tie with three in the seventh, then added one each in the eighth and ninth ends to cruise by Flemming 8-3 in the semifinal.
"They (Manitoba) played really well all week long," Campbell said. "They were one of the top teams, definitely."
