EDMONTON - Thousands of Keith Urban fans jumped at the chance to Get Closer to the country music superstar during a free show Tuesday at West Edmonton Mall.
Mike Goyette, his teen daughter and his mother estimated they stood about a dozen metres away from Urban during his acoustic set featuring songs from his newly released album Get Closer, along with other hits.
"We were pretty close," said Goyette. "It was a great show and the price was really right."
The trio -- including Goyette's 16-year-old daughter Shinahya and his mother Joan -- made the 460-km trek from Grande Prairie.
They hit the road immediately after the set, deciding against lining up for an autograph.
Jessica Veenstra, 23, waited in line for about an hour to get up close and personal with Urban and snag a post-show autograph.
But that was short compared to her 5_-hour wait in line prior to the show.
The self-professed diehard fan said she made the 140-km drive from Blackfalds and got in line for the 6 p.m. concert around 12:30 p.m.
But it was worth the wait, said Veenstra, who got a seat with friends mere metres from the small stage in the mall's Ice Palace.
"It was awesome," she added while in line for an autograph.
"He always puts on a good show. For acoustic, he's pretty darn good. He doesn't need a band."
Urban's free WEM concert was his way of thanking his loyal Edmonton fans who have bought more albums than fans from anywhere else.
"He says he loves us," Veenstra said.
There was no sign of Urban's wife, actor Nicole Kidman.
Urban's Edmonton visit comes two weeks after the release of Get Closer, the three-time Grammy Award winner's sixth studio album.
The singer and musician who last played Rexall Place in September 2009 is set to return to Rexall on Sept. 21, 2011, as part of his world tour.
Tickets are slated to go on sale March 4 at Ticketmaster.
