TORONTO -- Victoria Poon of Montreal won two gold medals while Andrew Ford of Guelph, Ont., and Tobias Oriwol of Pointe-Claire, Que., set meet records Friday to open the Canada Cup short course swimming competition.
Poon, who participated in the Beijing Olympics, posted victories in the 100-metre freestyle and 50 butterfly clocking 53.60 and 26.46 seconds, respectively. The 26-year-old currently holds the national record in both events.
"Everything went as planned," said Poon. "In the 100 freestyle, I wanted to take advantage of my strength in the 50-metre events and get a strong lead. It's great to be ahead of the times I had at this point last season."
Other winners in women's competition were Genevieve Cantin of Quebec City in the 200 backstroke with a personal best 2:06.08, Calgary's Erica Morningstar in the 100 breaststroke and Hanna Pierse of Edmonton in the 400 individual medley.
"I didn't have a very good preliminary race this morning so I wasn't expecting much for the final," said Cantin, who bettered her personal best by a second and half and her prelim time by four seconds. "But I'm really pleased with how I bounced back."
On the men's side, Oriwol took the gold in the 200 backstroke clocking a personal best and meet record 1:54.32. Ryan Lochte of the U.S., held the previous meet mark of 1:54.36 set in 2006.
"I returned to training four weeks ago and I'm really pleased to put up a time like that," said Oriwol. "My splits were very good and it felt good. It's encouraging for this point of the season. It's good to race short course now. It gives you a gauge on how your training is going."
Ford lowered his meet standard in the 400 IM clocking 4:14.94. His previous mark was 4:15.53 set in 2008.
Scott Dickens of Vancouver and Sean Nugent of Burnaby, B.C., tied for first in the 100 breaststroke both clocking 1:00.43.
