Canadian actor Leslie Nielsen has died in hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where he was being treated for pneumonia the past two weeks, according to reports. He was 84.
The star of popular comedies such as "Airplane" and the "Naked Gun" series passed away Sunday, according to reports attributed to his nephew Doug Nielsen.
"Today at 5:30 with his friends and his wife by his side, he just fell asleep and passed away," Doug Nielsen told Manitoba radio station CJOB.
Born Leslie William Nielsen on Feb. 11, 1926, in Regina, Sask., Nielsen has appeared in more than 100 movies and 1,500 television programs.
His older brother, Eric Nielsen, who died in 2008, was deputy prime minister of Canada in the 1980s.
