IGLS, Austria -- Canada claimed a silver medal in the team event Sunday at the season-opening luge World Cup.
Alex Gough, fellow Calgarian Sam Edney and the 19-year-old doubles teammates Tristan Walker of Cochrane, Alta., and Justin Snith of Calgary posted a combined time of two minutes 10.340 seconds.
The German team of Tatjana Huefner, Andi Langenhan and doubles pair Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt won all three heats for a total time of 2:09.519. Italy finished just behind Canada for third at 2:10.431.
"This is really great for our team," said Gough. "This event has become more important because now it is recognized as a World Cup event so it is lots of fun for us to race.
"Canada has generally had three consistent sliders in each discipline which is the difference between finishing on or off the podium in the relay."
The team competition consists of a female sled, a male sled and a doubles sled each completing one run for a combined final time. The athletes hit a pad at the finish to open the gate at the start for the next slider.
Meanwhile, Olympic champion Felix Loch defeated David Moeller for a German 1-2 finish in the men's event.
Two-time world champion Loch finished in an aggregate time of 1:40.398 seconds to win his second career World Cup. Moeller, who set a new track record of 50.185 seconds in his final run, trailed Loch after two heats by 0.046.
Armin Zoeggeler of Italy was third in the meet on the 1976 Olympic track.
Canadian champion Brendan Hauptman of Kimberly, B.C., was 14th at 1:41.161, while Edney finished 17th spot at 1:41.290 and Jeff Christie of Calgary was 22nd in 1:41.506.
"I really didn't have a great week of training so this was a little unexpected for me," said Hauptman, competing in his sixth World Cup race. "My goal was to try and build off the success I had at Canadian championships and stay close to my teammates, Sam and Jeff. It kind of exceeded from there and I'm pretty happy."
