{allcanada} Stewart, Winnik leads Avalanche past Flames

CALGARY, Alberta (AP)—Chris Stewart(notes) scored three goals for his second NHL hat trick, and Daniel Winnik(notes) broke a tie with 2:20 left in the Colorado Avalanche's 6-5 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night.

Stewart has eight goals in 10 games this season. He also had three goals last March against St. Louis.

Brandon Yip(notes) and T.J. Galiardi(notes) also scored for Colorado, while John-Michael Liles'(notes) NHL record for the longest assists streak by a defenseman to begin a season ended at nine. The Avalanche snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 5-4-1 and ended the Flames' winning streak at three

Niklas Hagman(notes), Tim Jackman(notes), Matt Stajan(notes), Olli Jokinen(notes) and Alex Tanguay(notes) scored for Calgary.

With goalie Craig Anderson(notes) out of the lineup with a knee injury, Peter Budaj(notes) made his second straight start for the Avs. He stopped 14 shots to improve to 2-0-1.

Calgary goalie Henrik Karlsson(notes) made 30 saves in his home debut.

Yip tied it early in the third when he backhanded a low shot to the far side behind Karlsson, and Galiardi converted a feed from Paul Stastny(notes) to put Colorado in front.

Tanguay made a nice move to backhand a shot past Budaj to tie it at 5, but Winnik fired a low shot to the far side past Karlsson for the winner.

NOTES: The Flames honored Craig Conroy(notes) for playing his 1,000th NHL game. … With Anderson out of the lineup, Colorado recalled John Grahame(notes) from Lake Erie of the AHL.
