The YTV series In Real Life has earned our respect and deserves applause in this regard:
It is an actual competition for young people aged 12-14, which means -- and this is rare these days -- kids are allowed to lose.
When kids are eliminated on the show, yes, they're upset, and yes, it's sad. But in this "nobody fails, everybody gets a trophy" society that has been created for cocooned kids today, it's refreshing.
Dare we say, it's good for both the kids on the show and the kids watching at home.
The second season of In Real Life, which begins Monday, Oct. 4 on YTV, sees 18 kids from across Canada competing in tasks related to real-life occupations. That includes everything from wilderness rescues to espionage to lobster fishing to video-gaming.
The ultimate prize is $10,000 toward college tuition and a family vacation. But not everybody gets that stuff just for showing up, which is the most valuable "real life" lesson of all.
