Jared Knight had to take the long way to get to the game, but he still wound up the hero Friday night.
The aptly-named Knight had the shootout winner as the London Knights scratched out a 3-2 win over the Plymouth Whalers in Ontario Hockey League action.
Knight scored the only goal of London's three shootout efforts when he roofed a backhander past Plymouth's Scott Wedgewood.
After Knight was sent back to the OHL from Boston Bruins training camp, he found himself stranded at Detroit's airport.
A flight delay made Knight miss his connection to London, so assistant general manager Jim McKellar told the right winger to take a taxi to Mt. Clemens, Mich., between Detroit and the border at Sarnia, where he'd meet him.
There, he paid the $95 taxi fare and they raced for London. Knight skated onto the ice five minutes into the game and on his first shift nearly scored.
The game marked the 10th anniversary of the Hunter regime in London. Former NHLers Dale and Mark Hunter own and coach the Knights.
Elsewhere in the OHL it was Sarnia 4 Windsor 0, Sault Ste. Marie 6 Ottawa 5, Kitchener 5 Saginaw 2, Guelph 3 Owen Sound 2, Niagara 6 Sudbury 2, Erie 5 Brampton 1, Kingston 4 Mississauga 1 and Oshawa 9 Peterborough 2.
