Cyle Larin's push to secure his spot on Canada's World Cup roster will now happen in the English Championship as multiple sources confirm reports out of Europe that Canada's second all-time leading scorer is set to move to Southampton on loan for the rest of the year, pending a medical this week.
The 30-year-old is under contract with Spain's Mallorca, and was recently on loan with Feyenoord in the Netherlands. Sources with knowledge of the move say Larin had interest from teams in France, Greece, Italy, Major League Soccer, and Spain.
Southampton currently sit 14th in England's second division.
Southampton emerged as a front runner because the team was keen to give Larin major minutes in the team's offensive system, which has the Championship's third highest expected goals, a stat that measures the quality of shots and the probability those shots will become goals.
But whatever Southampton's stats line say, this is a significant moment at this point in Larin's career as he fights for his place on the Canadian men's national team 130 days from the start of the 2026 World Cup.
Although Larin's 30 goals for Canada's men puts him seven goals behind all-time leader Jonathan David, and his 87 national team appearances is tied with Jonathan Osorio for third all-time, the Brampton, Ont. native's unsettled club form has made his immediate future with Canada precarious.
Since scoring 23 goals over 43 appearances in a league- and cup-winning season for Turkey's Beşiktas in 2021, along with his Concacaf-leading 13 goals in 2022 World Cup qualifying, Larin has had an inconsistent, itinerant journey through Europe. Over the last five seasons, through stops in Belgium with Club Brugge and Spain with Valladolid and Mallorca, Larin has 23 goals over 108 combined appearances.
Following his loan move to Feyenoord this past summer, Larin played only 152 minutes in the Dutch league, with no starts and no goals. He added seven more appearances for the Dutch club in the Europa league, starting twice and scoring once.
The decline in his offensive output has affected Larin's Canadian stock: He has one goal in his last 21 appearances for Canada, and is in a fight for a place in Jesse Marsch's World Cup attack against Villareal's Tani Oluwaseyi, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise's Promise David, Preston North End's Daniel Jebbison and Lausanne's Theo Bair.
Canada's men will meet again at the end of March for two international friendlies in Toronto against Iceland and Tunisia.
